mine is John Carpenter, dude lost his touch in the 90s but MAN... Escape from NY, The Thing, Halloween, They Live, Assault on Precinct 13. Those are 5 of my favourite films ever, all from the same guy. What about you guys?

I don't think I can narrow it down. Carpenter is a good pull, primarily on the back of Escape From New York (and L.A., which is a guilty pleasure), Big Trouble in Little China, Assault on Precinct 13, and They Live. His commentary tracks are also very insightful, which I appreciate.
Several of Kathryn Bigelow's movies are on my favourites list (Strange Days, Point Break, Hurt Locker). Ditto for Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, The Martian) and Tony Scott (Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Crimson Tide, Man on Fire).

Powell and Pressburger. Their films are always gorgeous to look at. Also up there are David Lean, Edgar Wright and the Wachowski Sisters.

For me it's a tie between Spike Lee and Kevin Smith.

Hard to pick just one, so I'll cheat a bit and list a few
Steven Spielberg (He has three films in my all-time Top 10, so if you made me choose one, it'd be him) Quentin Tarantino (Every Tarantino film to me is a special event) Peter Weir (Doesn't work as much anymore but he rarely puts a foot wrong when he does) Martin Scorsese (Consistently brings out the greatest performances in actors) Paul Greengrass (No one makes films as tense as he does. He can take a film based on a true story and make you forget the reality) Rob Reiner (For his 80s and 90s films: Spinal Tap, The Sure Thing, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry met Sally, Misery, A Few Good Men, The American President.) Just a shame about North. Curtis Hanson (for reasons I gave in his RIP thread) Alfonso Cuaron (the most talented of the Mexican Director influx of the last twenty years. Doesn't make many films but like Peter Weir, they're all excellent) Matthew Vaughn (I've probably had more fun watching his films in recent times than any other director) Christopher Nolan (There is no one quite like him directing films at the moment)

Powell and Pressburger. Their films are always gorgeous to look at. Also up there are David Lean, Edgar Wright and the Wachowski Sisters. P & P always get left out of lists like this, great choice. I could watch The Red Shoes once a week. Lean's another great choice, though it's funny...he's most famous for directing epics but the small and quiet Brief Encounter is probably my favorite of his films.

The top three are Tarantino, Nolan, and Scorsese in that order. A ton of different ones can vie for number four any given day.

I know it's a pretty generic answer, but it really is Spielberg. Raiders, Last Crusade, E.T., Jaws, Jurassic Park, Private Ryan, Hook, Close Encounters, the man's body of work is just full of quality.
The only two that really rival him in terms of how much I adore a huge portion of their work would be Richard Donner and Ivan Reitman.

Lucio Fulci. I love films like CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE BEYOND, HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, and MANHATTAN BABY.
A more recent fave is James Gunn. SLITHER and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY are both incredible, though admittedly I haven't seen SUPER.

I don't think I have a favourite, but I really like Spielberg, the Coens, PT Anderson, Denis Villeneuve, Ron Howard and Robert Zemeckis.
