I think I figured out what my issue with TNA's Grand Championship is (besides the fact the tournament finals were a foregone conclusion from the very beginning)
It's trying to be World Of Sport, but it's just... not very good at it. To compare, here' a World Of Sport match I found on YouTube, split into three videos.
It's got some similarities, like the three minute rounds, but where I think the Grand Championship matches falter is by only having three rounds. World Of Sport had 8 rounds, and needed two falls to win, and cases where it did reach end of regulation, which the match above did (Yeah, I know. Spoilers for a match that happened in 1987) it did go to a judge's decision, but it didn't have the convoluted points system. There were two judges on the outside, if they were split, the match's referee was the final judge.
It's not a bad idea. It just needs some tweaking of the execution.

No, this would be cool and unique. But remember they are TNA, they are trying to be UFC.

Let's do World of Sports without having wrestlers able to perform that style and make it work.
Sounds like a thing TNA would do.

8 rounds and 2 falls would be a HORRIBLE idea.
