Here are the only things that need to be read or watched to gain the full Star Wars experience: 1. Star Wars 2. Star Wars Holiday Special 3. Empire Strikes Back 4. Return of the Jedi 5. Ewoks: Caravan of Courage 6. Ewoks: Battle for Endor 7. Planet of the Hoojibs 8. Droids: The Cartoon Series 9. The Force Awakens That's it. Maybe the Marvel issues with Jaxxon in them. But really, that's it. Personally, I'd add Shadows of the Empire to the list.

Since making this thread I have watched Clone Wars and am up to date on Rebels. I loved Clone Wars, but Rebels is hit or miss for me.
I'm also in the process of reading all the Marvel comics. I didn't like any of the individual minis (Princess Leia, Lando, Chewbacca, Han Solo) but I'm loving both Darth Vader and the self titled Star Wars. I'm up to Vader Down and really digging them. I'm going to read Poe Dameron once I'm caught up.

I was really into the EU for a while, I can't remember how far I got into them, I think the Jedi Academy trilogy.
A great overlooked aspect of the EU was that Micro Machines would periodically come out with ships and figures from the books, further cementing them as legitimate Star Wars.
It's hard for me to answer the OP, because all the books I read continued forward with the series. None of it filled in the gaps or occurred between the movies.

I've been looking over some of my old Star Wars stuff lately to get me in the right mood for seeing Rogue One. While doing so I've come up with a theory that I want to run by you people to see how weel it works. Here goes - {Spoiler}Bea Arthur's character in the Holiday Special is actually Asajj Ventress. So, greatest idea ever, or greaterest idea ever?

If you can find it, Gennedy Tartkovsky's Clone Wars series is awesome. The creator of Samurai Jack's take on Star Wars is everything you'd hope it to be.

Some of it still should fit well enough into canon to count should they choose to count it. The introduction of General Grevious alone was worth the series. In fact, the canon Clone Wars carton seems to operate as thorough the introductions of Grevious and Ventress in that series were canon. The second show has both as known entities when it starts.

I would really like Disney to allow the release of Star Wars: Detours.
