On Austin's Unleashed podcast this week, he did a Q&A episode. Someone asked what he felt about playing entrance music during a run-in and how it destroys logic. Austin responded he didn't disagree that it makes no sense, but pointed out it was a TV show and though these aren't his own words, it basically cues the whole audience to the run-in and makes the pop huge. If he just ambled down to the ring, people would notice him (or anyone) one at the time and it wouldn't be the same.
Which makes sense, Foley's title win with Austin's run-in kind of puts the exclamation point on Austin's point. That pop was f***ing HUGE.
So, while I know most everyone hates the entrance music for a run-in, what do you think about Austin saying, while it makes no sense, it makes for a better product anyway?

It makes for a better product, its wrestling and sometimes you have to suspend your disbelief for the product. Its just like backstage segments, a camera sat there watching the heels plotting away, yes we know its stupid but its for the sake of the story. I understand that alot of thinmgs in wrestling are utterly stupid, but there are alot of things you really just have to accept to make it work.

I don't think it's too hard to believe that a face running to make the save may just shout "Play my music!" and the music guy manages to launch it within 5 seconds.

Nah, it's like those playsets you can buy. They all have chips in their boots, when they run past Gorilla, it automatically starts it up.

My child self as a fan assumed there was a huge board with a button for everyones theme that you pressed, so in that scenario, its not out of the question it can happen.

I don't really mind that.
I mind that time Cena was fired but they still played his music after he laid out Slater and Gabriel.

I am okay with the idea of music playing for a run in or save, I just think it should start far later than it does. It seems like the music hits, there is a gap and then they enter which makes it seem like they are trying hit cues or make a grand entrance rather than a save.

My favourite was when they were hyping up a Triple H appearance playing Mussorgsky's Great Gate of Kiev that Lawler uses instead of King of Kings.

I think WWE would benefit by being more choosy about when it happens. I'd be lying if stuff like the debut of Bikertaker or Steve Austin coming out to stun some guys didn't benefit by having the music played beforehand. Something like Seth Rollins coming out for a distraction as JeriKO wrestle New Day is so throwaway that it's not worth it. It should be for big moments where the spectacle of what's happening is so good you don't really care about the logical fallacy taking place.
Someone coming out just to watch a match from the stage and ultimately do nothing is not worth it, then it's just the production team being complicit in some scheme to mess with a match. In cases like 'Taker or Austin coming out, the shit's normally already hit the fan by the time they're coming out so you could argue that the production team are just embracing the chaos at that point and making good TV.

Pretty much. There are times when it's appropriate for the situation and makes a great moment iconic and there are times when it's completely stupid and pointless.

I could picture Austin hectoring the sound guy to play his music before a run in. "I want you to play my damn music so that son of a bitch knows he is in for one hell of an ass whooping!"

I kinda like it when the music doesn't hit because you see the crowd getting excited and standing up like you know shit is about to go down but you don't know why. It's pretty cool.

How would they be able to book the great and heralded "distraction and a roll-up" finish they are so fond of without it?

Sometimes the music makes it like Austin, other times it's better when the guy just runs out and attacks like Pentagon Jr when he broke Mill's arm, Mill this week with his spear on Puma out of nowhere, Savage's attack on Warrior at the 91 rumble or Paul Bearer walking through the curtain in that famous 5 vs 5 match on Raw in 2000.

The glass shatters just made it better Yeah, it was the best sound effect for this kind of thing, it was always like he'd just broken into the arena to raise Hell.

It was pretty awesome when Warrior's music played at WMVIII. It doesn't always work, but when it does, it's killer.

I'm not a wrestler or a promoter, but to me, I don't think you have to live and die by a pop, the fans will eventually get it

It's perfectly simple to understand why the music plays. All wrestlers have a circuit in their boot with two contact points that connect the circuit. When they stand on the stage, it connects the circuit and plays their music. This is why wrestling boots are so valued and expensive.
