Someone pointed out on another site that while many 80s musicians are still putting out music, they dont really have any hits anymore. That got me thinking, who was the last 80s singer or group to have a big hit (for the purposes of this thread, we'll define "80s music" as any artist who released their debut album between 1980 and 1989)? I cant think of any off the top of my head to be perfectly honest.

Dunno if it counts, but Weird Al had the number 1 record 2 years ago...

I don't know if this would count or not, but at Glastonbury last year Lionel Richie stole the show and was considered THE success of the weekend. Even the man himself was amazed at how much love and support the crowd showed him.

Even the man himself was amazed at how much love and support the crowd showed him. That is an interesting case. His most known solo work was in the 80s, but he was in The Commodores in the late 60s and the 70s.

Maybe singles aren't as frequent but there are still several artists/bands that released debut albums in the 80s that are having hit albums in recent years. U2, George Michael, Madonna to name a few. Even Rick Astley had a UK Number 1 album a few months ago.

Going through the #1 songs on the billboard chart the first name from the 80s I see is Dr. Dre with Eminem and 50 Cent in Feb. of 09 with crack a bottle. But that's really an Eminem song with Dre, rather than a dre song.
Mariah Carey had the #1 song in April of 08 with Touch my body.

Madonna and Kylie Minogue still get them over here, which I find amazing because clearly neither of them have give a shit for 15 years or so.

Dr. Dre still makes hits. A couple of the supposed lead singles he dropped for Detox became hits, I am thinking of I Need A Doctor and Kush. He dropped the Compton album, I can't remember if there were any radio hits on it, but the album did well critically and commercially.

Maybe we're getting posts from some alternate universe where Rule 63 exists in real life. Possibly, but looking back on some of Bon Jovi's early videos, it could always be an honest mistake.
