Okay, here's a fun one for you: Who can think of any gimmick from the past that flopped that would actually cut the mustard in 2016 WWE? For this thread any gimmick from the past will work, provided it it's WWF/E (because you really don't have to go that far back), WCW, or ECW. I'm also not talking about wrestlers who were good in the ring or solid on the mic but were underrated. I'm strictly talking the gimmick. By "get over today" I don't mean they'd be championship material, just better off than they were before. Other than that you can base it off any criteria you want. Hell, they could have been big in one of the three promotions but failed in WWE when they made the jump. That's fine, too. If I had to pick one I'd say the New Rockers. May sound nuts, but think about the attitude the fans have in 2016. The idea of 2 guys who think they're super cool but completely unaware of how uncool and out of touch they truly are feels like something that would fit right in modern WWE just fine. This is the era where people like James Ellsworth and Heath Slater can get over with a crowd then I think the New Rockers probably would have as well. While it isn't the same, the principal is. Just my opinion. Who else has one? Or two? Or however many you want to put. It doesn't matter. Frankly, I could see Slater and Ellsworth as the New Rockers definitely getting over.

Dan Severn's gimmick in his brief run WWF?
Highly-decorated MMA killing machine with UFC cred? Rumours about him possibly shooting on guys? No-nonsense black trunks? Dead-eyed glare? Loudmouth manager doing all the mic work? Moveset comprising nothing but takedowns and Germans?
Suplex City Brock doesn't seem such an original idea, really...

I honestly feel like pro wrestling's last hope at ever being culturally relevant would be if there were more absurd gimmicks done with sort of a "wink-wink, we're all in on the joke" approach.
WWE NEVER seems to realize when people enjoy something because it's ridiculous, and instead believe that people think it's the cool new thing. Just look at whey did with Fandango-ing.
Seriously, take something like Saturday Night Live's David S. Pumpkins, and go for the exact same approach. Start dropping ANY of wrestling's most ridiculous gimmicks in the shows like that, and it will go viral in the way WWE can only dream of.

Case in point: their rip-off of The Final Deletion. The Final Deletion worked because it was so over-the-top ridiculous, but evidently what WWE took away from it was that it worked because it was a glossily-produced location shoot, which was why New Day's visit to the Wyatt compound was just kinda tedious.

Big Bully Busik. Pretty much the typical anti hero, and Kevin Owens could carry that gimmick and become Steve Austin levels of popular.
Muhammad Hassan, because tensions are even higher now but if they toned it down slightly as to not make it as offensive. But I guess WWE do not do subtle very well, so scrap that. It just irks me so how that turned out because it was white hot at the time and I still get mad at the way Vince took a step to far then threw the guy under the bus. Dan Severn and Jim Cornette - Actually yeah, Brock Lesnar has that gimmick right now.

I think a decent redneck gimmick ala the Briscoes in RoH would be a hit. Don't turn them into a comedy shtick, don't give them goofy accents or any bullshit like that. Make it seem like people who are beer swilling asskickers. I know The Revival have undertones of it, but you can crank it up a little and still not be obnoxious. Just don't get into Godwinns or Hillbilly Jim territory, and don't make them seem "dark and demented" or else you dip into Wyatt family territory. So basically... It still stuns me they've not made it there yet...maybe on the next wave of signings once some of the current big guns either leave or go to the main roster? At this point, I doubt the Bucks would take the pay cut a WWE contract would give them.

I have a hard time calling the gimmick a failure though. The *writing* and *booking* failed more than anything. My Pick (And I am stunned that I haven't seen anyone mention it): The Devil's advocate gimmick that Sean O'Haire was doing before he got a live mic and everyone realized his live promo skills were completely nonexsistant. That...and the fact they put him with Piper....because.....uh....yeah... That gimmick had KILLER potential

Doink didn't fail but that gimmick would get over like gangbusters today. Especially if they used that sweet evil theme.

Heel Doink would be an awesome retread. How they didnt do that in the Attitude Era is beyond me. But you really do need a mean ass mother f***er like Osbourne behind the gimmick though.

Body-Donnas. Back in the 90's it was more about muscle mass in wrestlers but fitness is a huge thing these days, and over enthusiastic gym rats sure can be annoying (or at least the ones on my facebook). A team managed by a really fit woman(Mandy Rose maybe) who cut promo's talking about nothing else but their gymwork. Like a Tyler Breeze crossed with Mojo Rawley.

Also besides O'haire not being able to do the gimmick live (and apparently needing to do a shot of whiskey to do the pretapes) they had trouble figuring out exactly how to work the character into a wrestling setting.

Nailz was a good gimmick and his look was a good fit for it, shame it was played by a guy who wasn't that good and not that smart (of all the people in professional wrestling to assault you pick the guy who can destroy your career). But an ex con gimmick has a lot of potential. I floated this idea nine years ago. officialfan.proboards.com/thread/97498/convicted-felon-vows-revenge

Okay, going as low as possible: The Red Rooster.
Yes, it may arguably be the single worst gimmick ever at the time of it, and directly sank the career of Terry Taylor for good in 1989.
If you did the same thing in this era, though: You'd take a goofy gimmick like that, then hand that gimmick to a rising star outside the WWE who was widely respected by the fans as their gimmick? That guy would OWN Full Sail within two months.

I'm shocked that heel Doink didn't get a few cameos during the recent creepy clown fad.

It could have worked even then. It's a shame Vince didn't get it.
