This reminds me of an argument I had with my old video store manager. I put Wild Wild West in the western section, he said "No, it's not a western. It's a comedy." All "but it's not funny" jokes aside, his point was the west was just the setting and everything that happens in it could easily happen in another time or place.
He was an intensely stupid man and talking to him always gave me a headache.

The argument against Die Hard being a Christmas movie could easily apply to Home Alone. If the McCallisters went on a Summer vacation to France, you would still have the same premise. I wouldn't really call Home Alone a Christmas movie either for just that reason. Hell, I forgot it was even set at Christmas.

(No, 3 and 4 don't count) Like, 2 especially, it is pretty vital it's Christmas, given the subplot about Kevin stopping the bandits from robbing the Children's Hospital instead of just staying out of harm's way. Christmas is more important to the plot of 2 than it is to It's A Wonderful Life.

No. Even though it's set at Christmas, it could take place any time of year. The Christmas setting is just a backdrop, and has no real impact on the plot.
If you're using something being set at Christmas as criteria for a Christmas film, then 'Gremlins' could be considered a Christmas film as well.

If you're using something being set at Christmas as criteria for a Christmas film, then 'Gremlins' could be considered a Christmas film as well. And I would. Phoebe Cates gives a freaking monologue about Santa in it. Like unless she's the queen of the non-sequitur, I don't think Flag Day would cut it. I guess it's going to come down to criteria. It's obviously going to differ based on the person in the same way Halloween ones do. For some people, strictly horror is allowed, while most would also allow in slasher films. Past that, do you allow stuff with witches like Worst Witch and Harry Potter? How about science fiction when it's a creature feature? Creature of the Black Lagoon is pretty well accepted as a Halloween season icon, and that's basically a sci-fi creature feature. All going to depend on someone's criteria, a lot of whom want variety in their holiday viewing, I guess, so some play faster and looser.

Wasn't Gizmo supposed to be Billy's present? And Christmas/Christmas time is used in Home Alone. It has to be cold to ice the stairs, Marv steps on ornaments, he goes to church where he runs into the old guy again, etc.

The holiday does play a big factor- Gizmo is a gift, the Phoebe Cates thing, multiple instances of Christmas affecting the plot.

Is Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween or a Christmas movie? Both.

To me saying Die Hard is Christmas movie is like saying Psycho is a film noir because of the missing money. Both are devices to get the actual plot moving.

Listen FAN
I don't want to get too political here, but the following people are to be released from their captors.
In Northern Ireland, the seven members of the New Provo Front.
In Canada, the five imprisoned leaders of Liberte de Quebec.
In Sri Lanka, the nine members of the Asian Dawn Movement...

Of course. I've had this arguement with loads of girls mostly and once you point out all the xmas references you cannot deny that not only is it a xmas movie, it is the greatest xmas movie of all time.
