Just watched this on Netflix, and I had never seen it before. It was interesting, especially since all I knew of Hairspray is the musical.
It had the same plot, but with a lot less singing. Though Link was a total non entity, here.
Think my biggest laugh was a news report that said Link was Tracy's Common Law Boyfriend.

I love this movie. I always laugh when Mrs. Pingleton went to the hood to find her daughter and got spooked (I know, I know) by the winos that gave her change back. I watched the movie a couple of weeks ago and I had a hearty cackle when everybody at the black hop was popping their booties. I love Hairspray because it's a dance movie and I love dance movies. I also love this version because it's...dirtier than the musical movie.

John Water's love letter to 1960's Baltimore and alliteration.
There will only be one Edna Turnblad and it's none of the ones who sing.

IIRC, there was an American Bandstand style dancing show in Baltimore that Waters watched and enjoyed as a kid that actually chose to be canceled rather than integrate, so this was his way of rewriting history.
Sonny Bono made a shockingly effective villain.
