I haven't heard a peep about them. Did the gimmick quietly get dropped?

Nah. They just only appear on whatever the show taped before RAW is called now.

He was on Superstars before it's DELETION. I went to the Glasgow taping but he didn't have Backlund, I imagine it's difficult to transport Backlund around so I can see the gimmick being phased out.

Transporting Backlund is easy, just use the barrows they used for Hannibal Lector, or they could have him revert to his face persona and transport him in a ventriloquist doll travel case like Howdy Doody.

I guess now that the Make America Great campaign is over so to is the Darren Young one. The WWE for once were actually topical but now it's over they've dropped it.

A Make Heath Great Again storyline would of worked way better. No, it wouldn't. Neither would Bo Dallas or Jack Swagger. The whole appeal is the crazy-Backlund dynamic with the trusting straight-man in Young following his lead. Backlund-Heath/Dallas/Swagger would have been crazy-on-top-of-crazy and wouldn't have played to any of their strengths or clicked nearly as well.

If nothing else, Heath with a classic manager other than Jimmy Hart would be a travesty. Hart managed him for a single match, and they looked like they'd been working together for months. I could maybe see Swagger doing alright, but Bo or Heath wouldn't contrast as well, and besides, Heath got a way better gig.

Yep. and they really did a disservice to this pairing too. It got over as hell in his first few appearances with it. Even the match against the Miz was alright (despite the terrible ending) Then they decided to put him in an ending feud with Titus that sucked all the life out of the gimmick.

Should have been dropped when somebody pointed out that Darren Young was never "great" to begin with

I wonder what the gimmick would have in legs if they hadn't followed up weeks of vignettes with the wet fart that was winning a Battle Royal by accident after the other two remaining guys eliminate each other. Or that count out finish with Miz and the ensuing Titus feud.

I never got the gimmick. Young was never really great.
Would've made more sense with Sheamus post wwe title reign/league of nations.

Darren Young "never being 'great'" was part of the joke. You can't have a star who has had a legit run in that role, as then it becomes a "look at how far they've fallen that they need Backlund" comedy bit.
Crazy Backlund seeing the potential in Darren is why it worked.
And it did work. We got legit "DAR-REN YOUNG!" Chants. It was undisputedly over, a good idea, and a good execution.
But then they went into a former-tag-partner feud that kills pushes dead.

The segment with Titus the night after SummerSlam is one of my favorite bad segments ever.
