So, I am having a debate in another group I am in and wondered what you guys think. Which part of Dean Malenko's career is more successful? I have argued that he has gone on to find his true calling and most successful role backstage as a top agent/producer. While he was great in ring, he is actually been more influential and had more of a hand in driving the business backstage. I have been met with little support, but feel like this is a no brainer. What do you guys think? Am I way off track here? I am being told I am short changing his in ring career. I feel I am not, but that his role in WWE after retiring and its success(plus probably how lucrative it has been for him is greater.
Ps- if this needs move to Wrest, I apologize.

What are some examples of things he's done backstage, for people like me who haven't really thought about Dean Malenko for these past 15 years or so?

I think he oversees a house show loop. I think he is the go to agent for main event matches. Has a direct line to HHH. One of the go to guys when people seek out help for a match, finish, idea, etc. Generally a very valuable mind for the business ti have working for the company. These are just things I have put together from reading articles, listening to podcasts, watching shoots, etc.

He helped put Jericho, Mysyerio, and Hardcore Holly on the map. He was apart of a group whose jump to WWE was one of the final nails in coffin for WCW.
While there are a good amount of guys whose contributions behind the curtain might be considered more successful then their in ring careers (Big Johnny, Michael Hayes) I don't feel Dean is one of them.

I think Michael Hayes is a way bigger in ring star than Dean Malenko. To me, Dean Malenko was an athlete who had a damn good playing career, but an even better coaching career.

I'd need more stories about Deaner backstage to really know. On longevity alone, he's definitely played a huge role in WWE. Compared to career road agents like Tony Garea or Rene Goulet, his time in the ring was rather impressive, as well, but he never exactly became a top guy. Incredible worker, and more over than detractors remember, but always in the midcard. Still, though, what exactly has he done backstage? I have no idea, so I can't argue if it was better than a handful of great feuds or not.

I think Michael Hayes is a way bigger in ring star than Dean Malenko. To me, Dean Malenko was an athlete who had a damn good playing career, but an even better coaching career. Pat Patter was the first IC champion and went one to invent the Royal Rumble, every talent in NXT has a Dusty story to share about how he helped their careers and he was one the greats, HHH went from being one of the top stars in his era to pretty much running the company, even Matt Bloom I could see this debate about. But Dean besides what I previously mentioned was one of the last credible Horsemen, held the US title, the cruiserwieght championship four times, hanging with high flyers like Eddie or Juvie. Held titles in ECW and WWE as well. As for the behind the curtain stuff I haven't really heard much of anything, good or bad, and I pretty much forget he's there unless there's a pull apart going on in the ring. Oh and he was also ranked #1 PWI 500 in 1997. While he might not be remembered much these days besides creeping on Lita, he helped pave the way for guys like Daniel Bryan.

The real problem here is that without knowing for sure what matches he's agented or what he's brought to them, or even really someone talking up all the things he's done, there's no way to say for certain he's done more backstage than in the ring, when people have seen his in-ring stuff and never been backstage when he was agenting a match. There's so many hands in everything about WWE that singling out a single person takes some kind of confirmation, and I don't think I've even really heard him come up in shoot interviews in one capacity or another.

Dean Malenko will always be known for his incredible classics with Eddie Guerrero in ECW and his run with the cruiserweights in WCW. The cruiserweight division was on fire at the time. His matches with Shinjiro Otani, Chris Benoit, Ultimo Dragon, Chris Jericho, Billy Kidman, Rey Misterio Jr. and so many others were outstanding back in the mid to late 90s. While the NWO was running around doing in ring promos on Nitro, the cruiserweights were stealing the show for many wrestling fans back then.
