SmackDown was #2 in the 18-49 demographic, behind Curse of Oak Island. So, you put on a show that features charisma-less personalities, that has little-to-no story progression on a regular basis, and, when there is a glimmer of hope of something finally happening, it is quickly squashed and found out to be nothing. And still, you beat WWE!

Just the thought of this business being saved by removing that disgrace Ziggler from the title match caused people to tune in.
Now that Ziggler is still in, I expect SD to hit an all time low.

How close is SD to Raw in ratings now? A bit over 300,000 in favour of RAW this week. Is this the closest it's ever been? Wait wasn't SD beating Raw sometimes under Heyman in 2002/2003?

No, I believe it has been closer than this at some points of the last few months. And yes, SmackDown was often higher rated than RAW over that time period.

There's an article from Entertainment Weekly that talks about ratings challenged WCW in 2000, and how they were only drawing 3.25 million viewers against Raw on Mondays. The term used was a frail franchise. Different times.
