So I just rewatched Wrestlemania VII, which included the Jake Roberts/RIck Martel Blindfold match. Almost every online review of the event I have ever read HATE the match, but I thought it was pretty damn entertaining. What say you FAN? Good match or no?

Loved it. It's what wrestling is. Love the audience participation when Joke pointed around to help him find Martel.
And Martel had real heel heat

It was awesome. Never understood why people criticise it. The fans were completely hooked and it made sense for it to end this way considering that Jake had been blinded.

Funny enough, I re-watched this match just the other day. It was a fun match with a great build.

It's a fun match. I think people hate on it because it was obvious that they could really see each other.

I adore this match. When I first got into wrestling I read reviews of all the Manias and how this is one of the worst matches ever.
It's not. It's fantastic in so many ways.

It's weird. You kind of wanted a more severe ending for Martel after the horror he put Jake through, but it sort of works. Martel, the most vain man in wrestling, is forced to live how Jake had been living and made to look like a complete fool on the games biggest stage. Then, he's dropped with the DDT, which was more protected back then than getting thrown off the stage or something in modern WWE. It was the perfect ending to the storyline.

I hate this match. Why is it that every single "blindfold" match in wrestling involves bags over a guy's head instead of regular blindfolds?
Don't get me wrong; it served a purpose but once I start thinking about the logic, its ruined for me.

Don't get me wrong; it served a purpose but once I start thinking about the logic, its ruined for me. The bags are probably easier to keep from falling off, and are easier for the wrestlers out of kayfabe to see through, probably, while in kayfabe, it'd be more blinding.

You could see Jake's hand through the bag during the beginning of the match. I even noticed that as a kid

But yeah, as a product of its time it was really great in a lot of ways, just fit perfectly in an era of heroes and villains where the audience wanted nothing more than to see the bad guy get what was coming to him, in this case Martel getting embarrassed and DDT'd.

Great psychology, and the crowd participation is excellent.
That being said, if I never see this match again it'll be too soon. I simply don't care for it.

How did Jake recover his sight? I assume it healed over time?

I just wish everyone who hates it would get bent out of shape or hate on the general character-breaking and killing of kayfabe over the entire scope of today's product the way they show hate for the fact that the two combatants here can obviously see each other in this one match. If that happened, I could totally get behind the ones who hate it for that reason. As it stands, however, it's like everything else gets a pass. I don't know why.

It should have been bad, but with the crowd participation and Jake using it fully to his advantage it was actually quite entertaining. WMVII was a relatively poor card in general, but this certainly wasn't the worst match that night.

The match had psychology and brought a 5-6 month angle to an end perfectly with the heel getting his comeuppance.
I loved it.

Not many people could have kept a crowd interested for about ten minutes despite barely performing a move. Mr Martel and Mr Roberts did a phenomenal thing that night.

Everything about it is great. It is a match between two amazing performers of their time, in basically a blood feud...but blowing it off at WrestleMania in a comedy match that had the crowd WHITE HOT!!!
