I work overtime (that is, more than 40 hours a week) pretty often, but I'm salaried, so I don't get anything for it.
But on the flip side, sometimes I'm able to get away with working less, so it all evens out I gues.

I do it every night. I'm lucky if I'm out of there after 10 hours of work. Time and a half would be okay if it mostly didn't immediately come out of my paycheck already.

We fight like wild dogs at my work to get overtime, never understood people who see it as a burden. When you are on your 5th week of working 16 hours shifts 6 days a week, overtime becomes a huge burden. It all boils down,to me,if my time is worth the extra money. But being forced to work it ,nah that never works for me. I don't mind doing it if asked. But being told "Yah you are working over today." Never sat well with me.

I'm salaried and work almost entirely by myself, so I set my own hours. Sometimes that means 60 hour weeks, sometimes that means 25 hour weeks.

I worked a lot of mandatory overtime at my old plant. Sure, the 72 hour check is nice, but I can't buy that free time back.
Now, overtime is volunteering 8 hours on a Friday. (We work 4 12s normally.) I'll do it unless I'm backed up with shit I need to get done at the house...or I'm sick as a dog.

Now that I'm hourly, I wish I could get some overtime.

We fight like wild dogs at my work to get overtime, never understood people who see it as a burden. I used to have that stance when I worked in a factory, but then I had a stretch where they needed me to compensate for the company closing their second site, which resulted in me working 12 hour shifts during the week and 8-10 hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday. This went on for 3 months. I got over the rush of working overtime, though payday always took some of the sting out as at least my family got to enjoy some benefit of never seeing me.

Most of the time I'm totally cool with overtime. But if I gotta get home to my kids it's a done deal I'm out. Ive had jobs where they didn't give a shit about that and Ive quit over it.

at my last desk job overtime would be mandatory over the summer. Depending on the workload, weekends would be 7a til you were "done" (everything slowed down/stopped).
Unfortunately, some of those 12-hour mandatory days were turning into 14-hour days. I had to SHOW my manager that some of the intranet programs we use shut down after 9p so we should, you know, actually go home?
I was hourly and liked the money, I just didn't like when it was getting TOO long

There is a difference in being forced to do overtime and wanting it. If your forced to do it and when walking into your work day unware of it and lets say you had plans made with friends, Family, or a date even. Yet you get stuck working and having to cancel it. I don't fight for overtime because while it nice on a check, I like seeing my friends and family more. Now there are weeks for me that I have to do it. I am hourly but a 40 hr week for me doesn't happen ever really. But for example last week, we did have to work 6 days and over the 40 hr mark but when you moving soda as fast as you can put it out on a shelf, you have too. That why I never plan anything on a holiday week unless it the day of where I would be off like Christmas eve night or Christmas Day. Sure it sucks to not have a normal holiday with family and friends on most of them but we were warned on the day of hire so that was everyone chance to back out.

Several years ago, I found myself looking for a job. A couple of friends encouraged me to come work with them.
I asked the pay, and it was very good (damn great for around here).
I asked the shift, and was told, "5 p.m to 5 a.m."
I said, "Damn, that's shit, but I can make it work. How many days?"
"6, sometimes 7."
One friend got a little upset when I told him I'd have to be crazy.
I explained, "You guys have got families to provide for, and that's a hell of a lot of motivation. I'm single and I don't have kids. So that's a lot of motivation that I don't have. What I do have is chronic depression and anxiety disorders, so I don't think spending literally half my life in a room without windows doing the same thing over and over again is a good idea."
Neither of them stayed much longer at that job.

That is kind of what happened at my old work place. There was two places in the area that did the work we did. One of them shut down to be upgraded. So for months it was 6 days a week of 16 hour shifts. Sure the huge check each Friday was nice. But no amount of money can buy more time. Time is the one resource you can not get more of.

Had one job try to get me to work until 2am,working a 12 hour shift. Get off go home and be back at 5am for a shift. Casually mentioned how I know about the law about having 8 hours off between shifts and they quickly changed their minds.

Certainly not federal law.

December is the only month of the year overtime is not only approved without request, but encouraged. I suck up the last 2 weeks before Christmas and work 14 or 15 10 hour days straight.
However, throughout the year, working overtime usually means I'm covering shifts for other people, and that usually comes with little to no notice. To me my personal life is worth more then the money.
