They kept trying push him as the blue print but never pulled the trigger on him for good reason. In saying that tho he was given so many pushes it became ridiculous.
Tag Teams with Crimson, Super Mex, Abyss and individual feuds with each of them. Joining Fourtune and those horrendous matches with Jeff.
He was all over the place.

He's almost 7ft tall and has a good look. In wrestling, that opens a lot of doors and opportunities. If he didn't pretty much retired, Morgan would still be getting pushes.

Cornette's usually a good judge of talent, but this one was a head-scratcher.

Cornette's usually a good judge of talent, but this one was a head-scratcher. Because Cornette is a good judge of talent for what would have worked 30 years ago, and is in no way out of that mindset. In the territory days, Matt Morgan would have been able to find success with his look, and Cornette's sensibilities have not really evolved past then.

Good look, big guy, and at least largely decent in the ring and on the mic, biggest issues with him really are just not having all that much charisma or doing anything really unique to make him stand out.

Because he's a big man with decent mic skills who wasn't a dangerous oaf in the ring, unfortunately Morgan was lacking the intangible quality that would make him a star.

For a brief time as the blueprint, he was enormously over with the TNA fans. I think they tried to bottle that repeatedly and didn't really mind that he didn't have a single good match to his name.

He was tall, had connections to Hogan, and jerked it into a satellite that was launched in to space.

Because he's seven foot tall.

I maintain that Matt Morgan SHOULD have worked, but poor booking followed the guy around like crazy.

Cornette's usually a good judge of talent, but this one was a head-scratcher. Matt Morgan is tall with a good look. This was also the time period when Jim Cornette correctly predicted Brock Lesnar, Batista, John Cena, and Randy Orton were going to be big name stars when he was running OVW based on there size, mass, and look. Predicting 4 out of 5 ain't bad. Hell I would of thought and still think Matt Morgan had a better look then Batista's or Randy Orton's initial looks. And this was a time when Jim Cornette ran OVW exactly like WWE when they had more focus on about look and size and less on workrate and athleticism Here's kind of a good example on his OVW booking philosophy here.

Morgan's big problem is that he was about 7 feet tall but never wrestled much like a dominant big man. He had no intimidation factor and that is lethal for a 7 foot guy that is supposed to run roughshod. Imagine Sid or Undertaker if they didn't have that quality that scared the crap out of people. Matt Morgan seemed like a guy who would otherwise be selling insurance, or someone you could hang out with at Hooters (which I actually did after helping a friend move...we all went out for food/drink afterwards and a bunch of OVW guys came in, namely Morgan with a couple of blondes with massive fake boobs, Sakoda, the future Luther Reigns, and Shannon Moore).
For those keeping score: Morgan was pretty cool, Sakoda sat around not doing much, Reigns was a standoffish douche, and Moore was ultra cool and gave my friend's handicapped brother an autograph.

Big dude with a good look and decent in the ring (Crimson brawl aside). You could book someone like that as a monster and it would be credible. Unfortunately he was missing something that prevented him from going further than he did.

I maintain that Matt Morgan SHOULD have worked, but poor booking followed the guy around like crazy. TNA never seemed to understand how to book big guys. Like, Abyss spend how many segments, even before his downfall, getting beat down by people? I don't think they ever got that you can't book a giant like they're 6'1 and expect people to not lose faith in them.

I think calling him decent in any aspect that doesn't involve his height is pushing it. Maybe he's not a galoot when you put him in there with someone like Angle back when, but I look at Morgan and it's like he's the same dude he was way back when he was on Smackdown and was stuttering everywhere.
Yeah, if this were the 80's or so he'd have been more of a cog in DIS BIZNESS but now he definitely stands out as a guy where literally the only upside he ever had was his height. Generally below-average and a wrestler so unimpressive he can't even circle around to being entertaining consistently.
