It was meant to be a stand alone, title something along the lines of the coreleone tragedy The working title for Godfather Part III was "The Death of Michael Corleone". As for Sofia Coppola's casting, she was cast at the last minute due to some of Coppola's choices (Julia Roberts, Madonna, Winona Ryder) being either unavailable or declined (in the case of Rebecca Schaeffer, she was murdered). Yup, supposedly that was a Paramount decision to have the name change to Godfather part III. I feel like the name hurts it because it has to live up to it's predecessors. Like Halloween III you expect Michael Myers, with the Godfather III you expect something a bit better than what we got. Additionally, as others here have said the absence of Robert Duvall and Coppola's daughter in the film hurt it.

What's scarier than Godfather III was the talk a few years ago of a Godfather Prequel with new actors.

Interesting thing if you have the DVD with FFC's commentary. If you turn it on and go to the end credits Francis discusses what would of happened in Godfather IV. Basically it would have been about the Corleaones getting in on the Colombian cocaine trade of the 80s/90s. The project died when series author Mario Puzo passed away.
