I made a thread a few months ago about my love of Return of the Jedi and how it isn't quite the weak link of the trilogy that everybody thinks it is. Now another trilogy I like is the Pirates of the Caribbean series. In many ways POTC was trying to be Star Wars for a new generation. Now the popular feeling is that this series, much like the Matrix, has a great first movie, then two sequels that are best avoided. Now while I think that is true with the Matrix series and I am not a fan of Pirates 3 at all I simply love Dead Man's Chest and I think it is almost as good as the first movie and both are in my top 100 films.
It is the film that introduced Davy Jones in all his tentacled glory along with all his spectacular looking fish-human hybrid creatures, had the awesome scenes with the kraken and gave Orlando Bloom more to do. This also features the three way sword fight which I love. Any time a movie or a game has three opposing sides rather than simply good vs evil (think Avalanche vs Shinra vs Sephiroth) I love it and so this three way fight featuring characters we all liked fighting for their own logical reasons was amazing. Plus I love Jack Davenport since he stared in Coupling so seeing Commander Norrington get more to do was great for me (until the sequel killed him in awful fashion).
So do you think Pirates of the Caribbean is a series where only the first film is worth your time or does anybody else love the sequel too?

Norrington's character arc was great, so the movie's okay with me. It's a solid 7/10 for me. Things really fell off in the third movie, and the less said about the fourth the better.

Norrington really is the best here. I just watched the three way stand-off between Norrington, Turner and Sparrow again and I love that this movie really rewards viewers of the first film with both the plot arcs and the little jokes "Still rooting for you mate!" I hate the third film (way to waste the legendary Chow Yun Fat guys!) that I found the fourth to actually be better than the third. I'd probably rank them like The Curse of the Black Pearl 9/10 Dead Man's Chest 8/10 At World's End 4/10 On Stranger Tides 5/10

On Stranger Tides never should have been a POTC movie, but on another hand that's probably the only way the book would've have made it into film.
Still want to see a proper Monkey Island film, though.

It still bothers me that Norrington barely got more than a handful of minutes of screen time in the third, and was just killed as an afterthought. The whole movie just felt like they had built up far too many plot threads to tie together, and too many loose ends were left at the end, making it all feel unsatisfactory. If anything, I felt the movie should've ended with Norrington and his men realising that the methods they were using were wrong and leading the Royal Navy away, leaving Beckett to his fate. The only saving grace for me in the third and fourth movies is Geoffrey Rush. I'd happily sit through a Barbossa movie.

I think they were all good except that fourth one that didn't have Keira Knight,y in it.
In fact, even that one might not be so bad as I barely remember it in general.

POTC movies are fun, but overplotted. There are so many deals and betrayals going on that I lose track of what anyone's motives even are or who is allied with who.

I loved Dead Man's Chest, great sequel with one of my favorite cliffhanger endings. I'm a huge fan of the Davy Jones character as well. Unfortunately, the entire franchise hit a wall with World's End. So many plot threads just snipped, no real explanation, just 'crap, we gotta finish this!'. Pirates classic and this movie deserved a better resolution than they got.

Curse of The Black Pearl: Classic. Dead Mans Chest: Boring POS I almost fell asleep during. At Worlds End: Another boring POS I tried to stay awake to simply see how it ended.
...I watched On Stranger Tides but my mind literally blocked it out for me.
Upon re-watching the two sequels, I prefer At Worlds End simply because it feels conclusive. I agreed with one review that said AWE made DMC seem..pointless? Neither holds a breath to the original. They really should have kept it simple..other than maybe Davy Jones.
I have hope for Dead Men Tell No Tales but I'm not holdin' my breath.

I laughed when Keira Knightley tried to give an inspiring speech. As if anyone would follow that plum voiced Muttley mouth into war.

eh.. Dead man's chest was ok... but it's when they started going too far with the plots within plots stuff.

Love the first three, they were perfect blockbusters.
Fourth destroyed that good will.

Lmao, I actually agree about the speech. It comes off as so insincere and every time I watch it (comes on HBO a lot) it feels like the Pirates should go "who da phuck does she think she is?" Not that Keira's the greatest actress but if rumors were true, she was way beyond over the Pirates film by this point.

It took me a second to realize this was about POTC. I originally thought that I'd stumbled onto a very uncomfortable fetish thread.
