I'm specifically referring to foam fighting as a competitive sport (Dagorhir, Amtgard, Belegarth, or Way Of The Sword), not people who LARP using foam weapons. For anyone who doesn't know, Dagorhir (my sport) is a competitive team sport, in which competitors participate in full-scale battle scenarios (not scripted or choreographed). Think historical or mythological strategic warfare with a strong fantasy influence (watching a dag battle is like watching a scene from Lord Of The Rings or Vikings), using swords and shields (called "sword and board"), red weapons (the ones that break shields and sometimes bones - my boyfriend is a red fighter and glaive fighter, and has been the recipient of concussions and broken limbs - weapons have a metal core, and only light foam padding), spears, bows, javelins, etc. I am currently unattached to a unit (team), but training to be a sword fighter and spear fighter. In addition to larger battles (Winter War had over 500 fighters participating), there are frequent tournaments. Winners receive belt flags (equivalent honor: title belt).
