PUBLICITY STUNT This is a guy who has hardly been heard of since the late 80's.I have a feeling he's just saying this. But, he is on a successful sitcom now on CBS, the most watch network. If he has that kind of exposure, why would he need to come out and say he's gay?

What's the big deal ? It doesn't change the calibur of actor that he is. Doesn't make his shows any less funny. Only people that really have the right to be moderately upset are the women/ girls that have or had crushes on him. It's just really a shame that people feel like that need to hide their sexuality because of the public's backlash. Why should celebrities that we claim to like have to live secret lives just to keep the public happy ? That's just wrong. If we truly like them, and enjoy their work, it shouldn't matter what goes on in their private lives.

I think he caved in to pressure from PerezHilton, the biggest tabloid blog on the 'net. They've been trying to out him forever for some reason, and recently started some contest on their website for men who've had sex with him to announce it on their site.
I don't care about what people do in their personal life, so I don't really care what Doogie does in his.

Why would he mention this? It's not like I've heard any speculation about this. It's kinda like when Anne Heche was dating Ellen DeGeneres. She made 6 Days and 7 Nights with Harrison Ford, and it was hard to buy her getting romantic with a guy when her public image was so different from her character. NPH character, Barney, is a chronic and almost pathetic womanizer. It's going to be a little hard buying that now.

I'm sure he was about to be outed and knew it was better to come out on his own first. But I think you are in the minority, Dr T--most people can handle gay guys playing straight, it doesn't affect their acting. Anne Heche didn't strike people as a lesbian--she struck people as balls out crazy, and it was a case of the bad publciity swamping the fragile plot of the movie. Portia De Rossi has been Ellen's girlfriend longer than Heche was, and believe me, I have NO problem buying her as a straight woman!

Did anyone else read the thread and assume that Doogie Howser, MD was coming out on DVD? Well, the ads on top of the page advertise Doogie Howser DVD if that helps you any. In fact, all 4 seasons are offered in 1 ad.

Portia De Rossi has been Ellen's girlfriend longer than Heche was, and believe me, I have NO problem buying her as a straight woman! It's not necessarily that. I think that it is sometimes hard to accept a character if the actor portraying it is well know for being very different from it. Can you accept Tom Cruise as a cool headed hero now that you have seen him act bats*** crazy for the last year? It's not that the Barney character is straight; it's that he is such a womanizer that it is almost abusive to the egos of the women he is with. Then again, George Michael said that for years he would sleep with at least 4 different women a day. It's just one of those things. The show is on the same night as 2 and 1/2 Men, and that show has a similar character played by Charlie Sheen. Of course, Sheen's known for going through women.

^See now Charlie Sheen is known for being a 9/11 conspiracy theorist, that the federal govt set explosives in the towers, etc, plus his wife accused him of kiddie porn, and it has no effect on how I perceive his work. I notice Chunky Charlie, when he looks like he has been on a bender during shooting, and I noticed slimmed down Charlie Sheen who looks exactly like his dad as a young man. That's about it--I don't think about his nuttiness or his alleged porn. Same with Cruise; I totally believe him as a character in just about every movie he's ever done, even though I think of him in real life as a whack job. The gay thing is even easier to accept, because it's just sexual orientation and doesn't come with a set of off-screen antics or behaviors. The internet makes it possible to know so much about stars that you have to set it aside to enjoy the performance.

So he and Vinnie were playing doctor, huh?
As an aside, I think the guy who played Vinnie was like 40 when that series was on.

The guy that played Vinnie now pops up regularly on The Sopranos. Plays one of Chris's crew men.
I think he was the one that caught Vito in the Gay Club too.
