Having a big online presence helps the brick and mortars.
as well as stuff like Best Buy and Wal-mart having in store pickup instead of needing to wait for Amazon to ship helps on that front immensely (even with prime and 2 day shipment).
not to mention some stuff that's too large (read expensive) to ship that a lot of Brick and Mortar places hold.

This isn't just natural change in the marketplace. Sears/K-Mart has been horribly mismanaged more than most. Here's a great article from 2013 about the idiotic strategies put in place by its chairman. All this in an attempt to use competition between the divisions of the company to try to increase profit, driven by an Ayn Rand inspired business philosophy. It is run like a mini free market full of disfunction, rather than synergy. "Five years ago, Sears Chairman Eddie Lampert broke the company into 30 plus autonomous businesses, each with its own president, chief marketing officer, board, and separately measured profit and loss." www.businessinsider.com/eddie-lamperts-sears-strategy-disaster-2013-7Another article www.triplepundit.com/2013/07/sears-worst-retailer-company-america/On top of that you had Crafstman tools turning to pure made-in-china garbage. The prior reputation of those tools alone brought a generation of men to the stores. Kenmore is another Sears brand that doesn't carry the same reputation it used to. As much as I have a soft spot for K-Mart, being from Michigan, there isn't really anything it does that Wal-Mart and Target don't do better and cheaper. When in Michigan, I'd much rather go to Meijer than all of them. As far as other failing big box stores, JCPenny is BY FAR the best place I've found to get nice, affordable dress shirts and suits, so I hope they manage to hold on somehow. Their idiotic re-organzing of the stores so that it is "low prices all the time" instead of eye-catching sales absolutely killed them.

All things must change, I guess. I don't know how any brick and mortar stores can stay in business much longer. All the mainstays of the past, JP Penny, Radio Shack, Best Buy, etc. are all SOL Especially RadioShack since they filed for bankruptcy last week (the second time in 2 years). www.businessinsider.com/list-of-radioshack-stores-closing-2017-3

The presence of Sears & K-Mart is nonexistent in Indianapolis. Vietually all of the stores have closed.
And, the Sears that was at a mall I hung out as a teen was a glorified outlet mall as they put all the good stuff up in Castleton.
My brother actually worked at a Super K for a few months. Got his teeth chipped by one of those garbage disposals & saw countless thefts in the stocking area.

Considering K-Mart had filed for bankruptcy before being purchased by Sears, and then both stores continued losing money. And then K-Mart had a data breach back in 2014.
So I could see them going under in the next decade, if not sooner.

I worked at k mart 6 years ago. We have heard about this supposed closing forever. Big business always manages to stay alive at the cost of others.

Yeah, just like A&S and Gimbels they'll never go out of business.
It may take forever to limp along to finality doesn't mean it's not a dying brand.

The JC Penney at the mall near work, is closing soon. Sears and Macy's are still there, though

The town I grew up in must replaced it's K Mart with a Nordstrom and a Saks. Moving up in the world. A 3 bedroom Cape is also $550k now too

I knew Sears was screwed when K Mart bought them and stripped out the carpet and made Sears look more like a K Mart-there's a lot to be said for presentation and businesses don't seem to get it sometimes
We lost our local Sears a couple of years ago and 2 Kmarts this year-1 remains

Its funny to me in a way to see such stores suffering in the lower 48's, yet in Alaska, our best buys are doing great, so is JCPenneys. Hell, we still got blockbusters around.

The area where I grew up still has both a Sears and a Kmart, with the latter place still pretty busy. The big reason for this is the community has been able to keep stores like Walmart and Target out. If Kmart and Sears do go under it will be interesting to see if they change minds on letting one or both of those more successful chains in.

KMart hasn't been here for about 20 years. I don't think anyone has gone to the Sears here in about the same time.
