Do we really NEED the one "The Guy"? Yes. You want to have that person whose name you can put on a marquee and fans say, "I've got to go that show - I NEED to see X." Otherwise you'll get something similar to what it is now where the brand is the draw, and there isn't that need amongst fans to watch or go to the show. It's like any other tv show (ok, fine, most other tv shows) - you want to have that main character that draws people in. Now, the issue that they've had with Cena, and now seem to be having with Reigns, is that you also want a strong ensemble. That's what makes people remember the Attitude Era fondly - you had your main character, Stone Cold, but also a strong ensemble cast - The Rock, Mick Foley, HHH, Undertaker, Kane, etc. The problem they've had is that there is such a huge gulf between Cena/Reigns and everyone else, that the show becomes "John Cena and a Bunch of Jobbers." Anyway, to the topic at hand, the person who, if I were Vince, would be my pick for top star is Bayley. She's such a great babyface, and can appeal to a completely new audience that WWE hasn't had - and, if her NXT run is any indication, can appeal to that new audience without alienating their existing one.

It should be Balor in my opinion. He connects with every type of fan from kids, women & men. Unfortunately due to his size that will never happen. Styles is another option but he's about to turn 40 in a few months & there's probably not much long-term value in him as the top guy. I would have said Ambrose a year or so ago, but I feel that ship has sailed now. His character has been screwed with too much at this point to be able to be the top guy.

I'm very much a proponent of riding the hot hand, and that having a cornerstone "guy" for a long-term, 5+ year period is outdated in the current landscape. And I'm especially against shoving it down people's throat and force-feeding a "guy".
Now, as for who the hot hand is right now, that'd be AJ Styles.
