...that starts off kinda dumb but after a few seasons is so pants-crappingly stupid that they can't even function? Like Kelly Bundy or Eric Matthews.
Or even a character like Screech that started out really smart but then turned into a moron?

I thought Flanderization was when a character started out nice like Flanders but then became more aggressive?
Another dumb one would be Vinton from Mama's Family. He got soooooooo stupid

Flanderization, according to TVtropes, means taking a single (often minor) action or trait of a character within a work and exaggerating it more and more over time until it completely consumes the character. It puts Eric Matthews as an example of a character who started as a character who is girl crazy and a little dim to man child.

A Trigger. Starts off slightly less intelligent than the others in the cast. By the end of the final series is as thick as pigshit

Thanks.
Is there an example of a good 'Flanderization'? I usually hate it when they do it.

Thanks. Is there an example of a good 'Flanderization'? I usually hate it when they do it. While Always Sunny throws some nuance on its characters, the show's greatly benefited by taking the traits of characters and gradually dialing them up as the series goes on. I'd also say Zoidberg is much funnier being over the top butt monkey in Futurama then just being the incompetent alien doctor with occasional bad luck.

Although he wasn't technically the same character, Baldrick from 'Blackadder'.

Radar from "M*A*S*H" started out as a more worldly character, then turned into a more naïve farm boy. There were instances in the first season where he's shown drinking alcohol and smoking cigars, then later on he doesn't touch them.

He got soooooooo stupid Flanderization is kind of a catch-all term for any character trait that starts of as at least realistically played, but then becomes exaggerated to cartoonish levels as the show wears on.

Thanks. Is there an example of a good 'Flanderization'? I usually hate it when they do it. It happened on Friends. Joey - Stupid Monica - Neurotic Phoebe - Airhead Rachel - Shopping Chandler - Wiseass Ross - Sadsack Then I think they caught it before it got out of control and managed to dial it back again.

I swear it's intentional. mind it does lead to some odd bits like Mac being 100% a closeted gay man when for the first 5 or 6 seasons he was inarguably also into women. but that's bisexual erasure for you.

See Also: Dennis is fairly normal at beginning of series, slowly becomes a sociapath/possible psychopath as the series progresses.
