It was interesting at the time. Simply because WCW was so upside down by this point you had no idea who was going to win the title. I don't know why Benoit was put against Malenko in a cage match in the first round. Either one could potentially be injured or take a lot more damage wrestling in a cage match environment so whoever won that match could be at a disadvantage for the rest of the tournament. Then again this was near the end of WCW booking so I can't be expecting it to make much sense.

I'm a sucker for tournaments so I was excited to see it. But then most of the matches were really short Russoific super quick matches and it kind of hurt my enthusiasm.
The Bret/Benoit final is quite good though

Like the entire Russo era in WCW, it was exciting at first then quickly devolved into worthless crap.

Wasn't this like the first thing Russo and Ferrara booked in WCW?

Wasn't this like the first thing Russo and Ferrara booked in WCW? Almost. They booked the Nitro before Halloween Havoc and then the pay per view itself. They started the tournament the next night.

I liked WCW Mayhem at the time. I'm not sure a current day viewing would be so kind. At least they finally pushed Bret.

As confusing as the title tournament was, people were excited because it led to a PPV centered around Bret, Benoit, and even Jeff Jarrett. At the time, people were DYING for a WCW not centered around the same Hogan, Nash, Savage, Flair, etc. That excitement would soon fade when they realized this alternative wasn't any better.

At the time I was excited because stuff was actually happening after a dull summer and early fall but a few months back I started re-watching this period and mayhem is painful just too much happening each match has 1 or 2 run-ins or some kind of outside distraction. The announcers really push that 14 matches on a less than 3 hour show as a major selling point.

I'm convinced that world title tourney that lead to Survivor Series 2015 was someone's rough attempt to go near the absurdity of that tournament.
Right up to making us think Titus O'Neal, Kalisto and Tyler Breeze (in his DEBUT MAIN ROSTER MATCH) were world title contenders.
