Some are purposely scary, but generally-I just saw someone complain about Ronald McDonald-come on now-what's the problem?

I can only assume it's something to do with the grease paint or they saw IT and Pennywise stuck with them.
I dunno man... to me regular clowns ain't scary.

Ronald McDonald is scary though, he's responsible for the mass murder of cows, chickens, fish and potatoes... it's only a matter of time before he decides to give the go ahead for the Mcsoylent green burger.
and now I've given him the idea and doomed us all.
serious answer, it's probably to do with the face-paint causing people to be unrecognisable outside of being the clown.

Okay, removing for a second the fact that phobias are irrational and a fear of clowns based on what they are used for in horror movies is pretty legitimate, but...
...I hate clowns because they aren't funny. And you know what? I've never seen a clown that made me laugh, I've never met anyone who likes clowns, their makeup is weird, they do weird shit, clowns just aren't f***ing funny. Clowns suck. There's plenty of reasons to hate clowns even without coulrophobia in the mix.

Wikipedia seems to think it's a combination of their transgressive social behavior and the exaggerated features of the clown costumes which makes veer into the creepiness of the uncanny valley effect.
For me it's like - What kind of person would CHOOSE the life of a clown? That's a person to fear.

Because they are this ... ...with concealing makeup. They are disingenuous in a way that nearly anyone can see through which couples "what *are* their motives?" with the already concealed face. It's an outside-the-norm thing. An ironic joy. What's the real story? I mean, why is most anything in the realm outside of actual dangerous things scary really? Clowns don't have to be singled out.

I think it is a bit of uncanny valley thing a bit. They are people but everything is bigger and brighter , their smiles are bigger and with bright red lips, usually way too pale skin, over the top color and that can be a little creepy. Also some people find overwhelming cheerfulness unsettling and clowns usually have that in spades.

The only cool clown is the Joker.
Although, I wonder...Has he ever actually had the proffesion of being a clown in anything?

Purposely scary clowns aren't scary at all, but old-timey clowns are kind of creepy.

Tim Curry's portrayal of Pennywise. Starts and ends right there for me. The new one is so obviously evil that you'd shoot him on sight. Currywise was much more unsettling.
