I'm disappointed we never got the nickname "Ruthless Randy". Or indeed, "Randy Aggression"

Ruthless Agression? I see it as the period between Attitude Era and The conversion to PG.

It was so blah. At the time it felt like an excuse to bury Rob Van Dam since he clearly was too laid back to have "Ruthless Aggression."

Really, in the circles I ran in at the time and a little bit later, it was always called the Brand Extension Era and/or Post-War Era.
I remember the first time I heard someone call it the Ruthless Aggression Era was actually the WWE themselves. It was in one of their timeline/history books and I distinctly remember it because one of the boards I occasionally visited at the time had a thread about it and a collective "What?" over it. Everyone then pretty much saying what everyone in here is saying.
That said, I do remember Vince and the announcers using it sparely during that time. So it was a thing. Just not something I really took as a rebranding of the era WWE was in, more an extension of the downward spiral Vince's character was mentally going through at the time.

I always thought it stemmed from the cd release. WWE had like 3 discs One for New Generation, one for attitude and the current 2002 era called Ruthless Aggression. It was released before the wwf name change. It was the first time even as a new smark that i saw the phrase.

I remember Brock Lesnar mouthing those words after giving RVD the powerbomb through one of the Raw announce tables.

27-29 Nostalgia Era 30-now Workrate Era Those names are really bad. I'd call 30-now the NXT Era, if anything. Maybe the Network Era.

I call it the Ruthless Agression Era too. I think if they mentioned it more often, people would complain about them beating it to the ground. I always thought a good way to do eras was by WM. 1-6 Rock and Wrestling 7-8 New Rock and Wrestling Generation 9-13 New Generation 14-18 Attitude 19-23 Ruthless Agression 24-27 Universe Era 28-31 Reality Era 31-now Network/NXT/ NEW Era Fixed on what I think is more reflective.

I always thought a good way to do eras was by WM. 1-6 Rock and Wrestling While I understand why it is always considered one era (the Hogan reign mostly), I've never personally felt the whole thing should be referred to as Rock 'N Wrestling - the "Rock" part was long gone by WM4. The cartoon was cancelled between WM2 and WM3, with reruns coming to an end shortly after 3. By that point, they'd had Alice Cooper (barely) involved in the WM3 show but beyond that, it was all pretty much over and done with after 2 and its billion celebs no one cared about.

I can understand lumping 1985-1993 together as one era, but 1985-1989 and 1990-1993 definitely feel distictly different to me. The latter was definitely more polished, more over-the-top cartoonish, and pushed the envelope more with things like Iraqi Sgt. Slaughter, the snake bite, Quakeburgers, Warrior in the coffin, etc.
I think in my mind, they're the LJN era and the Hasbro era.

I always thought it was dumb to call that an era just because it seemed to go a couple years tops. Other "eras" in the company have gone for a good amount of time, even past when they used it for advertising. The "New Generation", "Attitude", all that was around a decent amount of time with remnants of it going into the next era. "Ruthless Agression" seemed like it just stopped cold one day (and not just because of Benoit, it seemed to freeze before that). I'll always look back on it as a time where it seemed like the in-ring product meant more than it has since then, but for me it goes right from "Attitude Era" (which for me goes into 2003) to the "PG era", which in my mind started before they officially went "PG", since the actual humor and storylines they were going for were about the same, just toned down a little (especially in the case of women), and then a couple years in there where they didn't know what the hell they were.

I was never big on the term myself; always sounded like the trite phrase some douchebag manager at a real estate company would write on a white board to motivate his sellers. Ask and ye shall receive...

Benoit had some pretty embarrassing nicknames during this time, but this was one of the worst. 4 Real was also just silly. It's hard to top the Crippler. Especially since he actually crippled someone. That kinda shit is hard to come by. Vince really loves his animal nicknames, so of course he preferred the Wolverine nickname for Benoit. Makes getting rid of those awesome claw slash tights even weirder though.

Switch 2002-08 to Post-War Era and this would actually be one of the more tolerable era distinctions I've seen posted out of the thousands of times this topic comes up.

I remember a WWE book rebranded the era as "The Post War Era" which sounds a lot better to me. Yep. That was about from when Lesnar debuted to when he left, so like 2002-2005. From 05 on, they called it the "Modern Era" and I'm not sure when that specifically ends or what right now's called.

Ruthless Aggression sounded so corny. I'm glad they ditched that asap.
