While I play Video Games online said by immature teenagers who think they are edgy by saying "I hope you get cancer" "that's cancerous" "Youre autistic" "kill yourself" I know it's sarcasm but its freaking cringy to hear its all they repeatedly say because it's famous on the internet to do so.
Guys whats your take on people acting like this?

As someone who works with special needs kids, I want to legitimately hurt anyone that throws out "autistic" as an insult or mocks them in any way. It's one of the most cold-hearted, shitty things someone can do. When I see certain pockets of the Internet that mock autistic kids (most of the people doing it are ADULTS), I pray for the end of the Internet.

I don't play online, but I see people throw around "autistic" as an insult in comment sections all the time, and it's never not f***ing obnoxious. Also as someone who had a cousin who was severely mentally handicapped, I despise how casually some people still throw around "retarded" as an insult.

As an "aspie" and someone who went to school, tutored (in high school, not professionally), and works with special needs people throughout my life, it bothers the hell out of me too. But I usually just shrug and brush it off. If you reply in any way, you're just loading the clip in their gun yourself.
But yes, it does bother the hell out of me. It bothers me more as it seems to be spun off of when everyone used "retarded" and "gay" for insults, as if all of humanity got together and agreed on a compromise.
My ultimate moment of anger was when I was in a theater group in high school and a group of kids in another branch were starting a charity to help kids in Africa (in fact, one of them was Jason Russell, who would go on to be the mastermind of the "Kony 2012" campaign). They were doing a little "spread the word" video, and at the end they did a skit that started with the three people who formed the campaign showing the video we'd just watched to a gym full of high school kids. So the kids in the gym start bombarding them with questions; some serious, some mocking, some stuff the video clearly covered if they paid attention. So the three kids who showed them the video huddled up and one of them asked "what should we do?" and one of them remarked "I think they're just a bunch of autistic, ADD kids or somethin'". And the whole conference I was watching the video with thought it was just HI-larious.
At the end, they gave me a bunch of resources to give back to the theater group (who I don't think was expecting it, because they never asked me about it). I pitched mine as soon as I walked out the door (this was my last weekend in the group anyway due to my age and the fact I was graduating high school).

I refuse to dignify such idiocy with a response. If I'm playing something online, which I rarely do, I just mute whoever's saying it and continue on with my life. No reason to get worked up over what some jerk across the world thinks of your skills if that's their idea of constructive criticism.

I also hate "autistic" as an insult. Especially since autism isn't really defined by one specific behavior but by a whole spectrum. So not only is it offensive, but also used inaccurately or outright incorrectly a lot of the time.

Just shut them down. You can't control what anyone is going to say to you but you can ignore them or block them. Those types of people have to live with themselves. You don't have to waste any time on them. |

Count me in as someone who hates "Autistic"and "Cancer" being used as insults.
It seems Autism has somewhat replaced Retard as an insult.
E.g. Some guy in his 20's/30's still likes to watch Cartoons.. Wow, he must clearly be Autistic...wow.
Cancer is a stupid one to, the sad thing is I have seen people make really good points about something only to completely ruin what they say by ending what they say by calling something Cancer.
This is why I tend not to play games online or use You tube comments section as I really can't be bothered to deal with these people.

at first it annoyed me too. but it's a unwinnable battle.
People who don't have personal experience of cancer or autism don't really get why those names shouldn't be used as an insult.
it's just easier to shrug it off, even if it takes time to get used to.
