Yeah...like Stage 5 of Red Canyon in Kirby's Dream Land 2. Was that the one with the eye that bled when hit? No, something a bit more...risque. {Spoiler}The last room contains blocks set up that resemble the body of a naked lady.

I think that Neo Contra was only slapped with an M-rating because of blood, but the game was a hard T and the game was not really that gory. I also feel that Mercenaries would have gotten a light M had there been blood from the gunshots. Driv3r was another one. The reason for it was just "violence" & aside from the ending where it looked like Tanner was flatlining and the deaths of Solomon Caine & Bagman (both were obscured), I fail to see the reason. Given it competing with GTA, it was possibly a case of wanting an M for credibility.

This topic begins and ends with "Rule of Rose" a PS2 game that came out from Atlus (not sure who the original Japanese developer was, but Atlus did the North American/UK distribution). One hell of a sick, twisted game that somehow got a PEGI 16+ in the UK instead of the M it got in the USA. Not to spoil too much about the game, but it's about a bunch of kids doing a LOT of things kids should never... NEVER do.
Oh, and it's also one of the rarest PS2 games ever released since a bunch of retailers supposedly refused to sell the title in stores! If you can find a copy you're looking at multiple hundreds of dollars for a copy!

The first two Ar Tonelicos (prob'ly this whole series) and Mana Khemia 2 are so blatantly packed with innuendo and some incredibly questionable game mechanics (second Ar Tonelico has certain characters leveling up by taking baths together, for starters) that I have no idea how they got away with T ratings. Mana Khemia 2 is s a damn good game ,just wanted to leave it out there

Wasn't that before the rating system? Way way before the ratings system. And really out of all teh 2600 games the porn ones would be the ones to get a M rating.

The Pride FC game for the PS2 gets an M rating, but comparing it to the Undisputed games, it doesn't seem to warrant it other than maybe having more blood.

I discussed this with a friend sometime ago about how with profanity and sexual content/nudity is common in games these days, it is guaranteed that if those games were released in the 1990's or early-2000's, they would have been given an AO rating.

Yes. Games have always been treated disproportionately compared to movies with same/more-explicit content. Just look at the development of Resident Evil 5 for evidence... Somehow "controlling" a PC (player character) killing African zombies is more racist than American History X... Let's forget Night of the Living Dead had much more graphic and controversial content back in the 1970's though, lmao! Hopefully this isn't seen as a political post... Uhhh I'm black if it makes any difference to mods lol. We should always get latitude for on account of them reparations and junk. 😁

Uhhh I'm black if it makes any difference to mods lol. We should always get latitude for on account of them reparations and junk. 😁 Look at GTA V if you really want to see a game that more than likely would not have been released in the late-1990's or early-2000's, let alone been given an AO-rating. I know that the GTA series, or any other games that Rockstar had done for that matter, are no stranger to controversy given its content. Hell, GTA III and Vice City were the poster children for that back in 2001 and 2002. However, they really went all out with the adult content in the later games. Does anybody remember the deal with the game called Thrill Kill? I have seen videos for that game and I can definitely see why it would have been given such a rating back in 1999. But the violence is not even worse than the violence in the Mortal Kombat games. The Wu-Tang game came out later that year, a game that was done by the same development team for Thrill Kill, and the violence was still graphic in that game. One more thing, T-rated games have lighter profanity in them for a long time as the worst word that is used is "shit." There were a lot of S-bombs in the Uncharted games and were given a T-rating. I guess it isn't so bad as T is the video game equivalent to PG-13, which is common in movies with said rating to have that word uttered multiple times. Although I will say that the first time I heard the S-word said in a T-rated game was when I played Def Jam Vendetta and it was only said once in the game.

The word "shit" has become more normalized in media than it was about 15 years ago. Shows like NYPD Blue and South Park (and their famous episode It Hits The Fan) have made it more acceptable to hear the word, at least on cable TV, so it's not that much of a surprise to hear it in a T-rated game, the equivalent of PG-13 movies.

I believe that the majority of the M-Rating for "Twisted Metal: Black" was because of the unsettling nature of the characters and the cutscenes for them. Yes, you had some people burning when running out of the car after it been destroyed, but it was more of the thematic elements than anything else. {Spoiler}For example, the cutscene for Bloody Mary (The driver of Spectre) had her stabbing a bride in the gut and blood was shown.
Then you had Mr. Grimm be a cannibal with some implications of him eating human flesh.
Sweet Tooth and his story. Enough said.
I could go on. However, the back of the box said it was because of gore and violence. While blood and gore was shown in the cutscenes, there really wasn't a lot of it in the gameplay.
