The current cage match format is dumb even without the door. Winning is achieved by running away from the opponent. Ooh, that'll show 'em. Well, beating them down so much they can't stop you, which is going to be longer than a 3 or event 10 count. It makes sense to me. Except that's never how it's booked anymore. We're well past the days of Bruno Sammartino bodying an opponent and walking out while they're laying. It's either a neck and neck race, or some bullshit interference. Today the cage match is almost guaranteed to never settle any score.

Cage matches should be easy to do.
You put the cage match in motion so there's no outside interference or a wrestler can't easily get counted out.
The only way to win is through pinfall or escape OVER the cage.
The face should almost always want a decisive win by pinfall.
The heel should always be trying to escape by the skin of his or her teeth, with the exception of an Eddie/Rey situation.
I "get" that escape is more compelling to look at, but it's so broken it looks stupid. On top of that, there's literally zero effort in going through the door, they don't even have to open it, as the ref does it for them. At least put a chain and lock on there or something. Maybe a key in the corner to help buy time? Regardless, Vince's idea of what a cage match is, is two guys fighting to escape from one another. Boy, what a blood feud!

Just once I'd love to see someone get out really easily.
Like, go through the whole, ten minute lowering the cage, setting up the drama, both guys entrances, etc. etc.
Then... kick in the balls, stroll out through the door.
interviewed right after, he's all like.. "Yeah...it was pretty easy really. It's just walking through a door, what did you expect?"

I'd get someone in the Tree of Woe in the corner opposite the door, then just mock them walking backwards the whole way, bit of a dance, flip the bird etc.

The concept of escape cage matches died to me when I first saw that.
