GOD DAMN I hate when they do the "escape through the cage door" bit. Its so goddamn lame, always a letdown, and ruins the logic of the match when guys try to go over the top when they could just fight near the door the whole time. Go back to chaining that cage door shut, Vince.

I have always wanted cage matches to be Escape over the top or TKO only for victory. cage doors are super lame. If a guy can't climb a cage even when healthy, don't make it a cage match in the first place. It's about as lame as an inferno match were one of the wrestlers wears only undies and the other guy has a body suit

It's just one of those things I've accepted growing up a wrestling fan, what annoyes me when they added pin fall and submission to some of them.

I prefer the door to climbing over the cage, but I hate how it's this crawling fiasco & the guy has to sell being dragged back.
But, frankly, I would actually prefer there'd be no Escape from the cage as a means of victory. That's why I hate the Bret/Owen cage match so much.

I feel like the cage door should only ever be used as a technical exit, normally locked but if someone's managed to break it open, if their feet hit the floor first it still counts. But not having the ref open it for people and have it as the main port of call.

Maybe this was a one time thing... possibly even in another promotion; but I seem to recall a cage match or two that the announcers talked about how the door would be locked for 15 minutes (or about that) to ensure the match wouldn't end without somebody getting their ass beat.

I grew up on over-the-top escape-only cage matches. I have no idea when they implemented the door escape, but I wish it'd stop. It's lazy as hell.

I despise escape the cage in general. Pinfall or submission in the cage.

Why can't we have a no-door cage with barbed-wire at the top and they lower it when both guys are in the ring?

It was sometime in the 70s or 80s...either with a cage match Andre was in, or the latest that I can think of being Hogan vs. Bundy at Mania 2. Because could you really expect Andre or Bundy to climb out a cage?

Honestly it makes climbing over the top look stupid. I mean how long does it take to walk out a door compared to climbing up and down the cage.

If I was the "cowardly heel" in a cage match I'd immediately go for the groin kick then just casually walk out the door. I know wrestling requires a massive suspension of disbelief but this seemingly random thing is where my brain decides to draw the line.

and they they changed it to "escape the cage BUT both feet have to touch the floor. so you'd have the one guy outside the cage only to get dragged back in because he was laying on the ring steps outside the cage but still didn't win despite "escaping the cage" because his feet weren't on the ground.

I think the "logic" is escaping through the door is the cowards way out, which is why it's almost always the heel who tries to go that route, only to be dragged back in.

I think 70s, it was a WWWF thing, I'm sure there were matches with Bruno and Backland just beating someone so bad they could get out.

It just negates the drama and brutality of the cage match. You either have to face the guy one on one and beat him cleanly in a wrestling match (with the assist of the cage) or try to escape but really risk getting yourself hurt by falling.

The only time the escape through the door option was useful was the Bret vs Sid cage match in '97

The current cage match format is dumb even without the door.
Winning is achieved by running away from the opponent. Ooh, that'll show 'em.
