Not super weird but the Red Hot Chili Peppers probably deserve a mention. Before they got incredibly lazy, they influenced funk rock more than just about any other band in that era. It was a nice change of you wanted something different than metal to listen to. I wouldn't say they were weird since by the time they hit it big with Uplift Mofo Party Plan, that funk rock was already in full swing. But they were definitely the most influential artists of that genre at that time. So I agree, but I also disagree.

Green Jell-O making it into heavy rotation on MTV back in the early 90s was really weird to me.

-Björk, over 20 million records sold with almost each album belonging to a different genre She's also considered quite weird as a person, even winning a "Most eccentric celebrity" poll by the BBC a couple years back and many consider her music videos nightmare inducing. Queen also deserve a mention.

Don't forget she was also briefly married to Space Ghost.

I used to describe System Of A Down as "Happy, Quirky Metal" and had this been posted before I heard Serj Tankian do "Mushroom Cult" with Dog Fashion Disco, I may have agreed. But while DFD never made it big, everything else just feels a lot less weird compared to them.
