Since I heard they were coming out with a new record soon, I was listening to their catalog again, and I had forgotten how many times I said to myself, 'what the hell did I just listen to?'

really depends on what you define "hitting it big" as.

Toxicity was definitely the soundtrack of high school for me. Steal This Album was probably the last CD I bought.
Such an amazing band.
I think Daron Malakian (the guy with the higher vocals) is a wrestling fan. At least he was front row at a RAW back in February.

I loved those records as well, and their later stuff had some amazing songs like 'Revenga' and 'Holy Mountains'

As long as Manson lives, he'll be the weirdest guy to make it big.

does anyone remember which Attitude Era PPV it was where there was a promo with a song by System of a Down? I think I remember JR or King even shouting the band out afterward on commentary, I just can't remember which show it was or what it was a promo for.

Google says "Sugar" was used for the Unforgiven 1999 six pack challenge I wouldn't be surprised if there was another one out there

Frank Zappa, easily. He didn't do anything for shock or even mainstream recognition, yet still had a pretty heavy following in the 70's.
SOAD I wouldn't consider weird, however they certainly made an impact then disappeared. Still really enjoy the first album, but the subsequent albums just don't hit me like they did back when I was in college. Chop Suey is the only other song off any of the other albums I can listen to.

I don't know about weird necessarily, but their music was definitely less conventional and more experimental at times than most other major acts. On the flipside, Manson's music was fairly conventional while the theatrics were bizarre.

As long as Manson lives, he'll be the weirdest guy to make it big. And one of the smartest in terms of knowing exactly what buttons to push and when to do it.

David Bowie anyone? Prince?
Both were groundbreaking for their artistic talent but their image was definitely gender bending for their day.
Marilyn Manson as well, although I wouldn't consider him on the musical level of the aforementioned two.
And whomever said Tool, ya, no. I love that band but the only weird element is Maynard James Keenan. Guy is his own form of showman and he's brilliant. But the rest of the band are ordinary dudes. And while Prince and Bowie's backing musicians were probably "normal" too, they weren't part of the creative driving force of the music they played. Tool's sound is comprised of four guys making it. You wouldn't have Tool if any one of them wasn't contributing

Not Marilyn Manson for sure. His music wasn't that different than other acts at the time and shock rock had already been around for a long time by the time he hit. He didn't really do anything that hadn't been done by previous acts, whether it be some of the theatrics of Alice Cooper or the cross dressing of the New York Dolls.
I think System of a Down got a little less unique as time went on as well, especially the difference in radio friendliness between the first two albums.

Faith No More is weirder in my opinion. I'm sure there's plenty of weirder acts that made it big. Also depending on what were defining as big

At the Drive-In was pretty damn weird. Their successor band of sorts, the Mars Volta, not as much but still quite odd.
