The star who helped birth the Marvel Cinematic Universe is putting some thought into when and how he wants to make his exit. Robert Downey Jr. is playing the role of Tony Stark, the Avenger known as Iron Man, for the seventh time in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but Downey says he won’t be playing Iron Man forever. “It’s this cyclical thing,” Downey tells News.com.au. “I could have said when the first Avengers came out: ‘It’s never going to get any better than that. Everybody stop’. But to me it’s always about people and opportunities, like the (Avengers directors Anthony and Joe) Russos, who I adore.” Downey seems to most fans to have been born to play Tony Stark, but Downey says that its always a lot of work and effort and he doesn’t want to grow complacent. “Everyone says to me it’s like a glove that fits so well,” he says. “I have to start over every time but I am starting over with a pretty solid base. I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven (MCU movies) I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it’s embarrassing.” Downey seems to be playing by the old showbiz adage “always leave them wanting more,” but will Marvel fans ever grow tired of Downey as Tony Stark? Time will tell. comicbook.com/marvel/2017/07/02/robert-downey-jr-marvel-retirement/

I get it, but at the same time, I think his best outing as the character so far was in Civil War. I think he's got a lot left to offer, even in a smaller capacity.

I liked Tony so much better in the movie than I did the actual Civil War book, it's crazy. Actually I felt that way about most of the characters, but the dynamic between Steve and Tony there was easier for me to invest in.

I guarantee this is at least partially inspired by the praise Hugh Jackman got for Logan. He wants to go out on top as Iron Man in the same way.

I'm not sure anybody with the surname Stark gets to enjoy a nice quiet retirement.

Maybe he watched Iron Man 3 recently. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) His performance was good. That movie... not so much. He is my favorite actor to play a Marvel hero. I can watch that first Iron Man movie over and over. He's so good in the role. I can't blame him for wanting to hang it up. He's made more than enough money and none of us are getting any younger.

I would not be shocked if Infinity Wars was his last ride as Tony Stark.

I've said it before, but I expect RDJ to settle into the Sam Jackson role of being the guy who shows up every now and then for a couple of scenes to help move the plot along. Marvel get to put his name and face on the posters, and RDJ gets to swell his bank account with minimal work, which is pretty much the issue - he likes the money, he likes the character, but he doesn't like the hassle of filming these complicated scenes.

He could easily still be Tony while retiring as Iron Man. Rich genius benefactor who quips doesn't have an age limit.

No disrespect to RDJ, but a lot of his movie choices outside of the MCU are pretty embarrassing in recent years.
Phenomenal actor who gets underutilized in most movies.

Great ideas, terrible execution is pretty much the story of Millar

Can this mean they'll finally do a sequel to Sherlock Holmes? Because RDJ was a great Sherlock.
