Apologies if there's already a thread on this but wondered if anyone had seen this movie? Probably my favourite of the year so far I loved everything about it, the music, the performances and action were great. I loved the constant soundtrack throughout the movie.
Edgar Wright can do no wrong imo.

Two-hour long music video with Grand Theft Auto tendencies as music video interludes.
That can be a bad thing or good thing. If I'm in a mood not to think, which was the attitude going into it, it's really enjoyable like that.
The first half was pretty amazeballs for what it was. Direction was on point in that first half with some really really clever sequence, but a whole lot more suspension of disbelief required for the second half to a point that it almost (if not completely) jumps the shark.
Better than Fast and the Furioius and the like by a country mile. Not up to the level of a balls-to-the-wall Mad Max: Fury Road though.
Loses rewatch value in some ways, but also the kind of movie that has enjoyment belts of laughter in a Roadhouse or Bloodsport kind of way, giving it rewatch value in other ways.
In short, that's a pretty solid set of combos, despite some of its obvious flaws.
Should have ended my comments on that last high note, but just one more note that I'm making that reminds me of another movie people go nuts for, and I'm hoping this doesn't become a trend. I see it as very similar to Guardians in the way it disguises or masks the burden of storytelling in some scenes by hiding behind a kick-a soundtrack. Joke or witty quip, action surge, music video sequence, tender moment, then rinse and repeat. Both are formulaic in this short-attention span theatre approach. People rave about it, but I do think both are overhyped by a reliance on episodic mini-moments. In Guardians case, that's good in a way because it is like a comic book like that. With one notable exception. The blatant suckering of audiences with music tracks is what I'm getting at. I love great soundtracks, but more in the incorporating-it-into-the-story sense like Garden State more than making several music videos and then hearing people talk about how awesome that was. I know Starlord has a mix tape and you can argue that it's "incorporated" into it, but come on, it's frickin' lazy and convoluted as all heck in the way they force it. These movies step outside of themselves to high-five the audience and forget what movie they are in many scenes, and that's my big knock on the hype trains for these 2k millennium adrenaline surge films. That thing that most rave about is the very thing that makes me eyeroll because of how insultingly base it is.

The thing that surprised my wife and I the most was how authentic to Atlanta it was. With the exception of the diner, pretty much everything mentioned was either real (Goodfella's Pizza) or a lightly fictionalized version of a real place (the bank in Dunwoody they rob in the Austin Powers masks). The newscasts throughout the film feature real anchors broadcasting from their real stations. The weather report Baby sort of listens to the day of the Post Office heist is an actual forecast from WSB radio. Later on, he turns it to 97.1, which is the local classic rock station. Baby even suggests to Debora that they go to Bacchanalia, a fancy restaurant that is within walking distance from our apartment. The most "Atlanta" thing, however, was when their high speed chase was momentarily cut short by an inexplicable, bumper to bumper traffic jam. I've been caught in that more times than I can count. (The traffic part, not the running from police part.)
One more thing: Wright turned what was planned to be his opening scene into a music video in 2004. (Baby actually flips past it before landing on Monsters Inc.)

Just got back from seeing it. Not sure how I feel about the last 15 minutes or so plot wise, but a definite A+ soundtrack and use of music.

Nightcrawler captured the L.A. heartbeat In a similar vein, and I love that Atlanta is an authentic character in this movie as well.

I caught it last week and thought it was a load of fun. The soundtrack does play a key role, but the character development is especially good.

Saw it last weekend. I'd say it's currently my favorite movie of the year. Some of it dragged along towards the end and {Spoiler}the ending was kinda shitty/bummed me out but it's still a hell of a lot of fun. What they do with music in this movie is amazing and the attention to detail is beautiful. If this doesn't at least get Oscar consideration in that regard, the Oscars truly are bullshit. It wasn't yet another comic book movie or sequel, which probably made me enjoy it more.

Great soundtrack for sure, But I just didnt get into this movie. To me it was a transporter rip off , with the lead not being half as cool as Statham . That Darling chick was smoking hot though

A musical covered in the trappings of a heist film.
The one thing that makes an new musical work is that you need one of the the following. You aren't working with the built in cache that comes with a long standing musical like a West Side Story or even a Grease, but you need at least one of these.
1) A kick-ass book of music that hooks people
2) A visionary who knows how to stage and maximize the effect the song has on the visual
3) A cast that can give great performances and slip in the little bits of character you need.
It's what made La La Land, which was not without flaws, one of the most enjoyable films I saw in a theater last year because it had all three of those.
Baby Driver is yet another fortunate musical that has all three. The way Edgar Wright edits his films makes the score a character, much like Atlanta becomes a character mentioned above. Plus you have people giving great performances like Jon Hamm against type and Jamie Foxx stealing the damn show.
TL:DR GO f***ING SEE THIS FILM

Good film but the gimmick wore off on me by the end of it. I enjoyed the first half of the film way more than the second half.

Solid flick. Action was top-notch. A lot of the performances were really enjoyable. Overall story wasn't anything to write home about. I liked that it was a small, personal story, but the ending - ho boy. And the old man angle could have been nixed really easily. Like, we get it, Baby's a nice guy. It wasn't egregious, but just felt superfluous to me. {Spoiler}Kevin Spacey's turn was completely out of left field. One minute he's threatening Baby's gf with bodily harm to keep him driving, the next he's ready to die to keep them together? wtf. They should have just kept it Buddy vs Baby after Darling got kia. Also, Edgar Wright needs to learn to write female characters. At first it was cute - like, "okay, gfs are just kinda there as props" but it's been 4 movies. The character of Darling was at least a decent attempt at it though.

Plan on seeing it on my weekend off next weekend. Dunno if I wanna see just it or double-up with Spider-Man Homecoming. I had half a mind to go to the local Alamo Drafthouse, which if I do, that takes out the double-feature (you order a meal during the film, which is mandatory IIRC).

Definitely enjoyed it, didn't regret spending $10 on a viewing.
Yeah, it was clear the bulk of Wright's ideas were served up in the first half, and I think the relationship angle could've been done a bit better, but I was at least in it 'til the end, flaws and all.
And yeah, good to see a non-franchise movie get at least a bit of attention.

I just got out of this movie. I enjoyed this a lot. I had heard a lot of praise surrounding it, so I went to it and it was definitely worth my money.
