Random thing I just found myself pondering over and kind of curious to get some thoughts on it. Might be a decent basis for an Elseworlds story or something but really just curious to hear some analysis of the idea, because I'm exactly that kind of nerd that I'll have a reasoned discussion about the hypothetical finances of Batman.
Say around the time Bruce was like three or four, the Waynes hit a big financial issue and basically lost everything, eventually stabilizing as a middle-class family, not completely poor but still pretty much reliant on Thomas's work as a doctor get by? Would they still end up being killed? Would they break up due to the stress on their marriage? What'd become of Alfred? What sort of person would Bruce go up as under more routine conditions?
I think it kind of depends on what version of Gotham and what interpretation of Bruce you go with, really. If the place is already a crime-hidden hellhole and you choose to read Bruce's issues as something pre-existing instead of specifically stemming from his parents' murder, I could very easily see him falling into petty crime, maybe eventually having some moment that does push him to re-evaluate things and try to make a difference, possibly more by becoming a cop than looking into the whole superhero thing. Under other circumstances though... I'm really not sure, it's a tough nut to crack.

Might be interesting.
But on the other hand, how many non-powered vigilantes are out there that AREN'T billionaires?
Batman having fat stacks isn't his superpower, it's just icing on the cake.

But it's also what gives him all the money to build all his tech, without that he'd be more like Daredevil (or Spider-Man at best). This also makes me wonder how much money the various Robins have had.

They wouldn't have been splurging money on going to see a movie that fateful night, probably.

It's hard to say if they were targeted because of who they were as opposed to just a random mugging based on most versions. I know a couple times he was a hitman. I usually chalk it up to just wrong place wrong time... otherwise you run into this idea that Bruce is fighting against corruption against the rich as opposed to the system itself.

That's why I'd love a "Multiversity" ongoing, Monthly/2 month one shots that are stories based on characters from different universes.
So much potential
I know we already have elseworlds stuff like Earth 1, Red Son etc but I think It'd be cool to delve a bit deeper into the multiverse

For years I've wanted to see an Elseworlds story that removed the factor of the Wayne family fortune. The way I see it, Bruce becomes a cop.
After Thomas and Martha Wayne are killed, Bruce becomes a ward of the state and spends years moving from one orphanage to another, because he keeps fighting against authority figures that abuse their power, bullies, crooked staff, gangs and other criminal activity.
After aging out of the system, he applies to Gotham Police Academy. Going in he's seen as a trouble-maker but his natural talents and strengths make him a stand-out cadet.
He joins the Gotham Police, where he is disgusted by the corruption all around. During the day he learns all he can about the crooked cops and officials, and at night he puts on a mask and does his best to disrupt their activity.
Newly-arrived Detective Jim Gordon, who is also disgusted by the corruption, starts to notice Wayne and eventually learns about Bruce's night-time vigilante work. Instead of arrest him, Gordon agrees to help...

That's why of little I have read, I really like the idea of Man of Bats and Little Raven from Batmen of All Nations. Which is basically Native American Batman and Robin fighting villains on a budget. I wish they would give him, Nightrunner, and Mr. Unknown (the Batman of Tokyo) their own respective stand alone series. Because these characters are really awesome ideas in the abstract. But for some reason Batmen of All Nations and Batman Incorporated just didn't do it for me.

In the 90's there was the Darren Aronofsky/Frank Miller proposed Batman movie loosely based on Miller's Batman: Year One. In it Bruce would lose his fortune after his parents death and be taken in by Alfred, who in this version was a black auto mechanic, and raised in Gotham's slums. When he gets old enough his Batman would basically be a cross between Travis Bickle and Casey Jones.

This also makes me wonder how much money the various Robins have had. Yeah, Batman's unlimited resources is absolutely a super power in it's how he gets things like the batplane, the Batmobile, all of the batarangs and all of his other gizmos that he uses. It's also how he was able to travel teh world and learn martial arts and the like. Batman without money would basically be a street brawling version of Daredevil, minus the radar sense.

I could be wrong, but wasn't there going to be a Batman movie where he was going to be a vagrant of sorts and his "Batcave" was going to be in a sewer and he basically made his gadgets from junk he found? I got the impression that this version either had his parents lose their fortune or never had bit to begin with.
