Episode 523: "A Surprising Fact! The Man Who Guarded The Sunny!" Sanji...the first man who might reach the moon if somebody showed him enough erotic pictures in his current condition. Another subdued episode where the Straw Hats dive underwater in their coated ship on their way to Fishman Island. It is really beautiful seeing through their eyes the wonders of being under the sea which reminds us of their similar journey up into the heavens during the Sky Island Arc. But mostly I enjoy these scenes just for seeing the Straw Hats finally being together and interacting like they never missed a day together including some funny moments like Chopper and Usopp having to continuously remind Luffy and Zoro violently not to burst their bubble or Sanji having so much terrible memories of the Kamabakka Kingdom that he gets nosebleeds at the mere movement of a woman. Through Frankie we also learn that Bartholomew Kuma watched over the Thousand Sunny during their absence as a final mission programmed into him before he completely lost his personality and became a mere human weapon. While we knew a bit of why he helped the Straw Hats get away, we do not know the real motives...and in a somber moment, the Straw Hats acknowledge that they owe a lot to him but he will not remember any of it due to the complete erasure of his personality. Kind of a down note. Otherwise, we get a nice flashback to when Rayleigh first met Roger as young men, Sentomaru reporting to Marine HQ about the progression of the Straw Hats and the implied end of the Fake Straw Hats...being buried alive (I guess in that sense Fake Robin and Fake Chopper got out of the affair easily). But the perpetrators, "Wet-Haired" Caribou and "Blood-Stained" Coribou are hot on the trails of the Straw Hats and are about to enter their ship. How will that go out? A good episode again. Manga Differences: -The talk between Young Rayleigh and Young Roger in the flashback is longer compared to the original where it ended after Roger first asking Rayleigh if he wants to turn the world upside down and Rayleigh's declination. -Otherwise, nothing that notable save for the usual scene extensions. Let us meet the day that follows today!

Episode 524: "Deadly Combat Under The Sea! The Demon Of The Ocean Strikes!"
Moomoo just cannot get a break, can she?
So, Caribou and his crew attack the Straw Hats...but that proves to be a mere distraction as fate would have it that Moomoo (from way back in the Arlong Arc) draws the Caribou Crew's ship. She definitely remembers Luffy and Sanji for beating her up, causing her to run away like a scaredy cat...or rather cow. This leads to a pretty funny scene with Caribou being the only one from his crew on the Strawhat ship and being revealed to be completely pathetic when faced with a stronger oppponent. Kinda sad considering that he came across like such a deadly psychopath before.
After that we go through a bit of a boring stretch explaining sea currents (though I like the bit where Chopper basically steals Brook's bit, causing the latter to have a bit of a depression episode...seriously, scenes like this really makes me so happy that we got the whole gang back together), it gets more exciting when they meet the next obstacle in the rather impressive looking plume: the Kraken (or at least a pretty big octopus). That one is certainly a pretty big pain in the butt and it shows its ruthlessness by immediately crushing Caribou's ship (leading to a rather dark humour moment when Zoro compares Caribou's crew drifting upwards to a school of jellyfish). The following combat with the Kraken is pretty exciting to watch because it shows off some of the Straw Hat's improvements over the years (Robin now being able to make large versions of her limbs appear and Chopper apparently being able to summon his transformations without using a Rumble Ball). It will be interesting to see whether the Monster Trio can indeed tame the Kraken.
Another good episode in a row (making me wonder if the therapy Chopper came up with for Sanji will have success. This is turning into a rather funny running gag).
Manga Differences: -For some reason, the anime replaces Luffy doing his Gum-Gum Twister with Moomoo in the Arlong Park with a generic punch of him during his initial encounter with Moomoo. Strange. -The anime actually shows Frankie moving up to Caribou and picking him up to throw him overboard. The manga immediately goes from Caribou's expression of surprise to him being up in Frankie's arms. -The Straw Hats protecting themselves from the Kraken's attack by the various evasive maneuvers listed above is again anime filler. The manga only has the Chicken Voyage maneuver after which it goes immediately into the Monster Trio's attack. -The usual scene extensions.

Episode 525: "Lost In The Deep Sea! The Straw Hats Get Separated!"
Darn, after they just got together after two years even...
Well, we already saw the development of the monster trio a few episodes ago but here we get the full effect when viewed through the eyes of the other Straw Hats. Especially Sanji (with his much faster speed) and Luffy (being able to use his Gear techniques without any side effects now as he doesn't shrink after using Gear Third) show their growth in the battle against the Kraken and Luffy's Elephant Gun is certainly an impressive technique.
Most of the episode deals with the Straw Hats traveling through the deep sea, heading for the Fishman Island while simultaneously looking for the Monster Trio who got lost after they defeated the Kraken. During those scenes, there is this really awesome background music playing, highlighting the mysteriousness of this part of the ocean while the Straw Hats get amazed and frightened at the wonders of the deep sea (giant fish and jelly fish, underwater volcanoes etc.). While this part of the episode is not highlighted with much action, the Straw Hat interactions (the highlight being Frankie's nipple lights) more than make up for it as does Frankie's recapturing of Caribou.
Ultimately, they come across an anglerfish and a...fat giant man with a high-pitched voice...as well as the Flying Dutchman? Wha...?
A decent episode all things considered.
Manga Differences: -Nothing that sticks particularly out besides the usual scene extensions.
Let us meet the day after today again!

Episode 526: "Undersea Volcanic Eruption! Drifting To The Fish-Man Island!"
Ummm...were Nico Robin's sketches always that...unique in their drawing style? I cannot remember.
We meet indeed the Flying Dutchman (though we don't see much of the captain...but apparently he is neither green nor a ghost in this version) as well as his cohorts, the Sea Bonze Wadatsumi and the anglerfish Ankoro. After a very quick heel turn for this show, the Straw Hats luckily get saved by the Kraken (whom Luffy has succeeded in making his pet, naming him Surume...which is the equivalent of naming your pet goldfish Sushi or something). It does look rather adorable how he transports the crew on his ship and this part also continues having fun material (like Brook being the most scared about the ghost ship or Zoro again insinuating that the others are the ones getting lost all the time...not to mention Nico Robin's drawings).
Things get tense when they have to run away (or rather Surume with them on top has to run away) from an underwater volcano eruption (though Robin gets a fun moment commenting on Surume's awful running form) and taking a leap of faith into a trench. It leads to a nice Usopp moment using his new plant-based weapons which makes me curious what else he has up his sleeve. And the escape ends on a pretty funny note as well.
After all that, we finally see the outside of Fishman Island (and it only took us about 200 episodes since it was first mentioned to get here) and this part of the ocean is really beautifully animated with the sunlight and the sheer size of the island. Unfortunately, Luffy and crew get accosted by a group of giant...sea monsters that look like lions, giraffes, bears etc.. Wazzup with that?
A good episode with some funny bits and the escape from the underwater volcano was suitably tense.
Manga Differences: -Nothing stuck out too much except the usual scene extensions.
See you again tomorrow!

Episode 527: "Landing At The Fish-Man Island! Beautiful Mermaids!"
Well, five of them are underage but still....
The episode starts us off with a tense confrontation between the Straw Hats and members of the New Fishman Pirates. We have Hammond, a fighting member who looks more like a bird than a fish really, Hyozo, a killer member who enjoys alcohol a bit too much and a third member who is completely forgettable. It appears that these pirates are two-faced in their attitudes towards the Straw Hats since they acknowledge the Straw Hats as the ones who defeated Arlong some 500 episodes ago but who also saved Hachi and struck a blow to a Celestial Dragon. Ultimately though, their vile intentions of letting Luffy choose between serving them or getting killed by them become apparent soon enough but luckily the Straw Hats escape via a beautiful animated sequence and enter the Fish-Man Island...but not before their bubble bursts due to lack of air, leaving them in the water surrounding the Fish-Man Island.
Fortunately, they are saved by Camie and her friends, a quintuplet mermaid group with a strange speech pattern (and I have to agree with Usopp. Why call the fifth one Yonka II and not Goka?!), and it's good to see Camie being the same oblivious ditz that she was two years ago (or rather 130 episodes ago). We learn a bit more about the Fish-Man Island which is divided into different areas like the affluent Fishverly Hills or the rough Fish-Man District (I guess there are no Weenie Huts there) or the Mermaid Area where Camie lives, not to mention the difference in rent depending on how near to the sun your apartment is, sea turtle elevators and water bubble roads. I wonder if there are some snorks around here?
Ultimately, we see the Mermaid Bay and kudos to Oda-sensei for giving us a wide variety of mermaids to look at and Sanji finally finding his happiness among them in a pretty funny moment. But dark clouds loom when the mysterious captain of the New Fishman Pirates orders Hammond and his men to bring the Straw Hats to him. What is his motive? And also...the name Fisher Tiger, the hero of the island...isn't that a name we have heard before? Questions over questions...
Another good episode giving us our first glimpse into the life on Fishman Island.
Manga Differences: -Again, aside from the usual scene extensions, there is nothing really noteworthy of being added that it would make a difference.
Later days!

Episode 528: "Excitement Blow-Out! Sanji's Life Under Threat!"
Well, if that isn't a contender for 1,000 Dumb Ways To Die....
We finally meet some of the higher-ranking officials on Fish-Man Island, namely the three Neptune Brothers. While the oldest one, Fukaboshi, has an authoritative air to him, the others seem to be more into music than anything else (or what other reason should they have for dancing or doing musical scales?) and also seem more like the jovial type of nobility. Their soldiers have a pretty awesome design IMHO, much better than the other soldier designs we have seen before.
And so it comes to this....while innocently trying to hide Sanji from the Neptune Brothers, Sanji gets a deep whiff of her breasts and explodes into the most epic nosebleed ever caught on film (even forming the shape of a mermaid). I can kinda understand it, the mermaid that hid him was among the cutest of them and she is also so worried about his condition that she does not even mind getting all that blood on her. Gotta love that the other Straw Hats, despite being worried about Sanji, cannot refrain from commenting on what a stupid way to die this would be: dying from blood loss due to a nose bleed.
We also get some more backstory that tells us about a law forbidding fishfolk to donate any blood to humans because it was the humans' refusal to donate blood that caused the death of their hero, Fisher Tiger. Interesting. An attack by Hammond and his group leads us into another impressive display of speed from Luffy who really has proved himself to have grown leaps and bounds over his previous self. But now they have to look for a blood donor. And apparently the three Neptune brothers did not look for them out of a need for arresting them? What does that mean?
All in all, another good episode.
Manga Differences: -The scene showing Frankie, Nami and Robin meeting up is all anime filler material. We see all of them much later in the manga (and there only one-after-the-other...what they do will be shown in the equivalent episode). -Also Zoro being accosted by some Fish-Man Island soldiers is an anime-only addition. We also see him at a later point in the manga. -Hammond and his crew rising to the surface while holding a discussion is also added to the anime. We don't see them until they arrive at the Mermaid Cove in the manga. -The usual scene extensions.
See y'all 'murrow!

Episode 529: "The Fish-Man Island Will Be Annihilated?! Sharley's Prophecy!" *sigh* Even after 2 years, Luffy has not been healed of his obsession over how other beings poop... We get introduced to Madame Sharley in this episode and she is quite a different kind of beauty compared to the other mermaids with her big body, jet-black hair and purple attire. Even if she weren't beautiful, I'd still like her for being the first to have a natural reaction to Luffy's poop question (unhinged anger. I especially the little shark-like "Sha!" she does at the end there ). We also learn that she is a fortune teller with a high percentage of correctness regarding her prophecies. Otherwise, this episode is mostly about further introducing us to the wonders of Fish-Man Island: -we learn about the specific genetics of the fish people (i.e. whether a child becomes a mermaid/merman or a fish man/woman is not 100% sure). Seeing how they have no problem with that makes me sad that it is not that easy in the real world. -Food items are mostly made from seafood and seaplants though fishmen do consume meat (that, of course, makes Luffy happy who does not consider clams etc. real meat. What a cretin). -Vander Decken, the captain of the Flying Dutchman we met a few episodes ago, is a very creepy stalker wanting to marry the mermaid princess and is thus hunted by the Neptune Army. Makes me glad that Absalom got the Invisibility fruit instead of that creep. -The island, after Whitebeard's death, is now protected by another of the Four Emperors, "Big Mom" Charlotte Linlin, who, unlike Whitebeard, demands compensation for her protection...in sweets. Strange. And I agree with Luffy....I wonder if we'll ever meet her. -Other small stuff like the fish taxis, the water highways, a look into Fishverly Hills (the most fashionable district) etc.. As for the characters, Sanji gets better (though he has a horrible relapse after he learns the identity of the two guys who donated blood for him), Brook is apparently a chick magnet (or rather a fish magnet) and we meet Pappagu again (who still gets ignored when trying to explain something) to ease us up a bit from the exposition-heavyness. We also learn that Luffy apparently developed strong antibodies due to his exposition to Magellan's poison, no-selling a poison hit by Hyozo in the previous episode. Ultimately, the episode ends with Sharley being tormented by her vision that Luffy will destroy Fish-Man Island! What the heck?! Another good episode here. Manga Differences: -Luffy, Usopp and Chopper searching for a donor, earning sad ignorance from the fish folk until Chopper finds some humans is anime filler. We immediately go from the manga-based part in the last episode to Sanji waking up in the back of the Mermaid Cafe in the manga. -Pappagu's flashback to when he found Brook is also added in the anime. There was no flashback like this in the original manga. -Luffy's flashback to him being drenched in Magellan's poison is also filler material that was not there in the manga. -The usual scene extensions. Until 'morrow!

Episode 530: "The King Of The Fish-Man Island! Neptune, The God Of The Sea!"
A choir should have sang down Neptune like this:
"Haiiiiil, oh haiiiiiiil, oh hail the mighty kiiiiiing, oh hail the King Neptuuune! King of the mighty seaaaa! Oh hail the kiiiiiiiiiing!"
But first, we get a closer look at the New Fish-Man Pirates, namely their captain and what I assume are his field commanders: -Hordy Jones, the captain who is like Arlong a shark fishman but appears to be a lot fatter than the latter -Dosun, a hammerhead shark fishman who ends his sentences with -dosun and seems very much a flat head. -Daruma, a cookiecutter shark fishman who sits like Gollum on the outhouse and appears to be the most feral of them all -Zeo, a carpet shark fishman who looks less like a power ranger and more like Zoidberg after a weight loss programm and falling into two paint buckets at the same time -Ikaros Much, a giant squid shar-...sorry, only a giant squid fishman who certainly looks much tougher than Hachi but with his constant "-ch" ending his sentences, he always seems on the verge of needing a spittoon.
Despite my comments, they actually look pretty tough and ferocious which Hordy Jones proves by taking care of a few pirates (including perhaps the wimpiest-looking pirate captain I have ever seen despite having an aritificial crab arm)....though this gets somewhat dampened by him eating some drugs called Energy Steroids (i.e. the stuff that Scott Steiner takes). If he needs those to take on a bunch of normal level pirates, how many does he have to take against Luffy to win? Though the destruction he causes is still impressive all things considered.
Meanwhile, after Nami successfully managed to get all the clothes designed by Pappagu for free (where we learn that Pappagu really is a big-shot on Fish-Man Island), we meet the ruler of Fish-Man Island, King Neptune. Decent fellow though I wonder what his obsession with Spanish ham is all about (or why does he end his sentences with -jamon?). Anywho, he invites the Straw Hats to a big feast for saving his daughter's pet shark Megalo (who got freed from the Kraken's clutches when Luffy punched the latter) so the Straw Hats are in for a nice treat...or are they?
Good episode introducing us to the New Fish-Man Pirates and to Neptune.
Manga Differences: -The first scenes showing the pirates running towards the ship getting ready to flee is anime filler. The first time we see them in the manga, they are already on the ship. -An anime-only scene showing Sanji and Chopper with the Okama Pair in nurse outfits wanting to treat Sanji. A dumb scene that was not there in the manga. -Otherwise the usual scene extensions.
See y'all the day following today!

Episode 531: "Ryugu Palace! Taken By The Shark That They Saved!"
Great, now that she's been touched by a man, no being will ever marry the Mermaid Princess...well, except the guy who constantly throws stuff at her.
A fairly uneventful episode detailing the Straw Hats' arrival at the Ryugu Palace which is really as marvelous as they say it is. On the way there, we get some more exposition about why there's sunlight on the bottom of the ocean (due to a tree called Eve. Well, I should've guessed given that a tree named Adam exists in this world as well) and some fun moments with Pappagu freaking out over the Straw Hats nonchalant behaviour around the King Of The Sea. Then again, considering how both the Ministers To The Left and To The Right basically make him their bitch for sneaking out, nonchalant behaviour is what he deserves.
Meanwhile, Caribou (remember him?) kidnaps some mermaids for obvious reasons in a rather disturbing scene (mostly for kidnapping the cute mermaid who got splashed by Sanji's nosebleed) where we also learn that he ate the Swamp-Swamp fruit, enabling him to create swamp out of his body which somehow only puts the mermaids to sleep instead of suffocating them. The princes and the guards also learn from Sharley about her prophecy which causes them to apprehend the Straw Hats out of precaution.
Finally, Luffy follows the scent of meat and gets to a room where he meets...the dream of every giant girl fetishists ever (well, if they also have a fish fetish as well). Though the crying might put some people off (then again her crying is not as bad as the mermaids in Kidd Video). What shenanigans will Luffy have with her?
A decent episode here.
Manga Differences: -Luffy strolling around the Ryugu Palace looking for the meat he smells is a lot longer compared to the manga version. -Otherwise, the usual scene extensions.
Until 'morrow!

Episode 532: "A Coward And A Crybaby! The Princess In The Hard Shell Tower!" Has it ever been scientifically proven that you can get diabeetus from a fish? So we meet Shirahoshi, the princess of the Ryugu Kingdom and she is certainly quite the shy, timid creature which makes her utterly adorable in my book. And I cannot help but think regarding the time frame where Oda wrote the chapters, her color scheme in the anime (pink hair and yellow clothes) and her character in general if he wasn't inspired by a certain other favorite character of mine... (of course, this is probably not the case 100% but it is fun to consider for me Anyway, after saving her from an axe, Luffy gains Shirahoshi's trust and most of the episode is spent with them talking. We learn more about Vander Decken and actually see him face to face throwing the aforementioned axe (he seems to have a grave case suffering from the spose'das, if you know what I mean). Certainly not a good-looking fellow so I can understand Shirahoshi not wanting anything to do with him though he is a threat due to his devil fruit power with which he can target Shirahoshi from seemingly everywhere. In conclusion, Luffy wants to help Shirahoshi escape her boredom (despite stating that he does not like her because she is a crybaby and a coward. Guess Ace had more of an influence on him after all) and will take her out for a walk. Meanwhile, the other Straw Hats are to be taken into custody by the Neptune Army but they are no match for them (although we hardly see them do anything). Zoro joins the fun as well and even manages to block an attack from King Neptune which is kinda impressive. Ultimately, there seems to be a collaboration made between the New Fish-Man Pirates and the Vander Decken crew....which cannot bode well. A good episode here. Manga Differences: -The scene with Zoro imprisoned and sleeping off his drunkenness is anime filler. We don't see him again in the manga until he actually blocks Neptune's attack. -Otherwise, the usual scene extensions. Let us meet again on the day that follows today!

Episode 533: "It's An Emergency! The Ryugu Palace Is Occupied!"
Sanji's gonna kill you for this, Brook, when he finds out...
So the Ryugu Palace gets occupied by none other than...the Straw Hats who take out the whole palace guard, the two ministers and King Neptune (the latter mostly due to him throwing his back out...he should really get that treated) and tie them up, leading to the obvious disagreements and funny moments (seriously Nami, now's not the time to think about treasure). Zoro appears to have learned some negotiation tactics somewhere since he is quite adapt at it while Fukaboshi takes it pretty nonchalantly that his father is taken hostage and the palace occupied. He even gives two messages intended for Luffy by Jinbei to Zoro: "Don't fight against Hordy!" and "Meet Me In The Sea Forest!"
Another group of Straw Hats, namely Chopper and Sanji, meanwhile have to fend off another group of Neptune soldiers where we also learn that Chopper learned a new transformation, calling it Kung Fu Boost. And indeed he jumps around, yelling in his best Bruce Lee falsetto and beating people up. Neat.
Ultimately, in this fairly straightforward episode, the palace gets attacked by...human pirates being thrown at it while Luffy takes Shirahoshi out for a walk...with her hidden inside Megalo's stomach (hopefully, she does not have to come out in the natural way). What will this all lead to? And what does that one minister mean by calling Nami's current Log Pose useless?
A decent episode this time around.
Manga Differences: -Basically all the scenes with Shirahoshi and Luffy, discussing whether or not she should go (and padding out the episodes' runtime even more), are filler scenes. The only actual manga-based scene is them fleeing from the Hard Shell Tower. -The opening scene with the fight Straw Hats vs. Neptune Army including Nami's maneuver to make the whole reception hall full of air with a large balloon is anime-only content. Originally, after Zoro intercepts Neptune's first blow, the next time we see them, the fight is already over and the Straw Hats are bickering. -Otherwise, the usual scene extensions.
A break tomorrow for Manga Volume 65 so see you all on Monday!

Episode 534: "The Ryugu Palace In Shock! The Kidnapping Of Shirahoshi!"
Poor Megalo! After that endeavor, I doubt that he would want to eat any sort of meat for a while...
Most of this episode is focused on the genius plan Hordy Jones and Vander Decken came up with to conquer the Ryugu Palace: use Vander Decken's Mark Mark Fruit power to throw human pirates that got captured by Hordy at the Hard Shell Tower so that they can open it from within for them...should they survive the crash against the tower. Well, I hope he didn't get any Glass Joe's in his collection. This again emphasizes that Hordy is at least as much of a racist as Arlong was, considering human life to be practically worthless. We also get the full scoop on Vander Decken's powers: whatever he touches and "locks on" so to speak will be hit by whatever he throws, no matter in which direction he throws knives, axes etc. which explains why he is able to hit the Hard Shell Tower so precisely.
In that vein, there's another person that gets that treatment from Vander Decken: Hachi whom we see for the first time after the time skip...and it is certainly not that pleasent a visit getting impaled by several arrows thrown by Vander Decken while Hordy watches. It is interesting to see that Hordy, despite his disdain for Hachi and what he has become since the defeat of the Arlong Pirates, respects him enough to call him Hachi-san. Curious that he still shows a sliver of respect that way despite treating Hachi like dirt.
And so several human pirates get thrown at the Hard Shell Tower and miraculously survive, giving the Straw Hats another burden to contend with (at least Zoro is pretty simple....he just wants to cut them).
Otherwise, we get a nice scene with Luffy and Shirahoshi (just seeing Shirahoshi being so happy looking at the world outside her tower makes one smile) and we learn the reason why she wants to go to the Sea Forest...because there's a grave there. Meanwhile, Chopper and Sanji fend off some Neptune Soldiers (Sanji thinking only about wanting to meet the mermaid princess) and find the wounded Hachi who warns them to get out of the country. We also see Jinbei again finally, holding an imaginary conversation with the one who is buried in the sea forest...Queen Otohime. Who's that?
A good episode all things considered.
Manga Differences: -The scene with Frankie and one of Tom-san's relatives is anime filler. We don't see those two until a bit later. -Sanji, first talking to the Neptune Soldiers and then beating them up after they want to handcuff him, is also anime-only content. The scene with them starts in the manga after they have already defeated the soldiers. -The usual scene extensions.

Episode 535: "Hordy's Onslaught! The Retaliatory Plan Set Into Motion!"
Well, Luffy, I am sure her father and her brothers will really appreciate you telling Shirahoshi about your big farts and other riveting stuff...
I bet deep down Hordy and his crew are really disappointed that the Straw Hats made their conquest of the Ryugu Palace so easy after one of the battered human pirates finally pulled the lever. Liked Zoro casually disposing of the human pirates as will as his bickering with the minister to the right (not to mention Nami and Usopp being depressed about their crewmates being so wacko...guess that part of their characters have not changed that much in 2 years). We also learn that Hordy was a member of the Neptune Army once...and that King Neptune really, really, really, really does not want Vander Decken as a son-in-law in a fun moment. Have to admit that it took me way too long to get why Vander Decken has to have a bubble around him despite being a fishman (being a devil fruit user, he, of course, would also be subject to get weaker through sea water).
Otherwise, Nico Robin gets a moment of awesome taking out some Neptune Soldiers (most of her MO in the past two years seems to be using multiple limbs to create really big limbs for battle) and Frankie shares some bonding time with Tom-san's younger brother (again including a neat view on fishmen and their view on differences between races which is something that most in the real world can learn something from). But for the most part there is not much going on here in this episode. But going by the preview, the next one should have some good action.
Still a decent episode all in all.
Manga Differences: -The opening scene in the palace with Zoro and the others taking care of the human pirates is anime filler. The manga-based content begins from the bickering scene between Zoro and the minister to the right. -Luffy and Shirahoshi's conversation about various topics is also anime-only content. The only manga-based part is when Luffy notices the New Fish-Man Pirates travelling to the Ryugu Palace. -The whole scene with Nico Robin fighting the Neptune Soldier is 100% anime content. The only scene with her from the manga is her travelling in the Fish Bus. -Otherwise, the usual scene extensions.
Until 'morrow!

Episode 536: "The Battle In The Ryugu Palace! Zoro vs. Hordy!" And so Megalo could not look at any vore pics for a very long time... The occupation of the Ryugu Palace begins in earnest with us getting more of an insight into how much these New Fish-Man Pirates were influenced by Arlong (triggering some bad memories for Nami on the wayside). While it is kinda understandable, given the humans Hordy and his field commanders encountered in their youths, this shouldn't be a "go out of jail free" card to oppress the innocent. The battle between Zoro and Hordy starts decently enough with Zoro having the disadvantage of battling underwater, but he manages to keep up with Hordy well enough. Also an honorable action by Zoro to free the soldiers since he could not keep up his end of the bargain and keep the hostages unharmed (due to Hordy attacking them). And I am starting to like King Neptune more and more, seeing as he is similar to King Cobra (from Alabasta) in sacrificing his life even for his own soldiers. While Nami is off doing something with Camie (and Brook getting weaker just from standing in sea water), we don't know how this battle will end. Meanwhile, the inhabitants of the Fishman Island have turned full-scale (no pun intended) against the Straw Hats and won't even let Chopper treat Hachi in peace without throwing garbage at him as if he was a participant at Bash At The Beach 1996. Things get worse when Luffy and Megalo arrive and Megalo just cannot hold it in much longer and vomits something adorable out (yeah, I find Shirahoshi to be such an adorable thing . Well, now what? And how do we keep Sanji from getting a good look at her? A good episode all in all. Manga Differences: -The whole opening scene with Luffy, Shirahoshi and Megalo was anime filler. We don't see them again until they arrive at the spot where Sanji and Chopper tend to Hachi (though I like the scene for Shirahoshi's sheer adorableness and Megalo almost spitting her out after laughing at Luffy's grimaces to cheer her up). -The flashback to Hordy and his field commanders almost getting caught by human pirates in their youth before getting saved by Arlong was also anime-only content. No such flashback was at this point in the manga. -The scene at the sea forest with Nico Robin meeting with Frankie is also not based on anything in the manga, but an anime-original scene. -The usual scene extensions. Let us see each other again the day that follows today!

Episode 537: "Keep Shirahoshi Safe! Decken Close Behind!"
I swear, if I don't survive this arc, it will be because Shirahoshi gave me diabeetus...
Most of the action in this episode takes place on the coral hill (where Hachi was found by Sanji and Chopper). Sanji proves that you don't need a gorgon or hit by Hancock's Love-Love Power to be turned into stone apparently, as this happens to him upon seeing Shirahoshi. Having mentioned that, I have to say that while Shirahoshi is adorable 100% of the time, Hancock can be considered a mature beauty (except when she goes all school-girl like in Luffy's presence), so I'd say they both have their positives.
Following this, the crew gets captured by the merfolk living there since they are being suspected as up to no good (and Shirahoshi's presence proves that to them). It is a nice touch that Luffy does not consider them enemies since he does not retaliate against getting captured. The restraints are useless anyhow since Luffy is even able to counter Vander Decken in that state and makes short work out of him and his cohort, Wadatsumi as well in an awesome fight scene.
Meanwhile, at the Ryugu Palace, Zoro actually manages to slash Hordy Jones in what seems to be a critical hit. Wait, does that mean the threat is over since the Straw Hats managed to take out the two beings that were portrayed as the ultimate threats in this arc? I guess we'll have to wait and see (although I have kind of a weird feeling about this)....
A decent episode here.
Manga Differences: -Not anything that particularly stuck out, besides the usual scene extensions.
See you all...later today!

Episode 538: "The Straw Hats Defeated?! Hordy Gains Control Of The Ryugu Palace!"
Defeated? Not again...granted that was about 130 episodes ago but still...
Turns out that a room filling with water is indeed detrimental to the Straw Hats' chances at winning against the fishmen. Especially if the latter swallow drugs to enhance their bodies into Scott Steiner physiques. Nevertheless. the sequence gives us a neat underwater sequence with Zoro fighting off several fishmen and King Neptune paving the way for his soldiers to get out of the palace...'sniff' a truly noble king he is. Sadly, he is not able to keep Zoro, Usopp and Brook to get captured by Hordy.
Meanwhile, Luffy and his group arrive at the Sea Forest leading to a quieter but none the less interesting part full of humor (Chopper's relief that Sanji has returned to his former womanizing self, Luffy's misunderstanding about Frankie's explanation about who Tom-san's brother is and the resulting silent moment, every fish person's reaction to seeing Princess Shirahoshi there) but also turning pretty tense. While we only had Yosaku's interpretation from ca. 500 episodes ago to go off on, we finally learn that it was indeed Jinbei who let Arlong loose on the East Blue and, in turn, causing the tragedy that befell Nami and her home village. Jinbei nevertheless shows some great humility in thanking the Straw Hats for defeating Arlong, but how will Nami react to this news? And Luffy, could you please stop calling Shirahoshi Coward? She has a name, you know?
But what are the New Fish-Man Pirates doing that has to do with Shirahoshi's mother? Questions among questions...
A good episode to see here.
Manga Differences: -Zoro having to fend off several fish-man pirates before surfacing is anime filler. Originally, after slashing Hordy, he immediately went up. -The whole scene with the three princes investigating near Pappagu's house, getting called to the watermill district and Ikaros Much coming up to start his attack is all anime-only content. The next time we see the princes they are already in a fight in the watermill district in the manga. -The usual scene extensions.
See y'all 'morrow!

I'm so proud of you, MD. It's still a long way to go, but you made it past the time skip!

Thank you. I am actually more surprised that besides 2, 3 things I don't know anything that has happenend in the One Piece world in almost 2 years (regarding the manga mostly). So I am definitely looking forward to hitting the point where I have no idea at all what awaits me. Episode 539: "The Haunting Ties! Nami And The Fish-Man Pirates!" Why doesn't it surprise me that Sanji apparently has a giant teacup among his dishes? While the episode title would imply it, this episode is not really that much of a clip show/rewind back to the Arlong Arc. Most of it is spent in a discussion among the Straw Hats in the sea forest regarding Jinbei's involvement with Arlong and the beginning of relationships between the merfolk and humans. It contains a nice callback (as mentioned last episode) to the time Sanji and Luffy first heard about Jinbei (though why Luffy would waste any thought on a useless bag of air like Yosaku is anybody's guess) and brings to mind again how much the Fishman Pirates ruined Nami's life. It is neat that they use all-new animated scenes for the flashback scenes instead of just using the clips way back when. Perhaps at this point they thought the style from those first 200 or so episodes before the show's upgrade in animation would be too jarring which is why they'd rather animate it all new. Still, this part serves as a good reminder to Nami's past (and it brings up all those emotions again ) for those that joined the show later. Strange things happen meanwhile in the parts of the Fishman Island occupied by the New Fish-Man Pirates where they force the inhabitants to step on a picture of Queen Otohime to show their loyalty to them...never thought I'd see a reference to how the Japanese proved the loyalty of Hidden Christians to the Shogunate in this show but here we are. From Jinbei we learn that the fishmen (including a rather adorable scene of young Arlong, Hachi, Kuroobi and Chu swimming to the surface and looking at the lights of the Sabaody Park. I guess as with everything it is the environment that develops one's outlook on life) longed for life on the surface despite being persecuted and looked down upon by humans. And he mentions two important figures in this history - Queen Otohime and Fisher Tiger. I guess we'll have a look at those two in the next episodes. A good episode again. Manga Differences: -The scene with little Arlong and his group mentioned above is shown in more detail compared to the manga (where it was just four silhouettes looking at the Sabaody Park in one panel). -Dosun threatening an island citizen and getting intercepted by Prince Fukaboshi is an added scene to the anime. In the manga we immediately go to Fukaboshi asking Dosun about their actions. -The flashback to Nami's past was extended a lot compared to the manga's few panels. -The usual scene extensions. Until 'morrow!
