Fun and intriguing video on how the simpsons rose to its initial prominence and brilliance before its descent into the thing it is today

Most arguments can easily begin with "Mike Scully", and it's been agreed on.
There's more to it than that, but once Scully became showrunner, his lax standards resulted in stuff like Homer getting molested by a panda, celebrities being brought in just to have them (this was common already with people like Johnny Unitas & the Cheers cast, but Joe Namath was the first "useless" guest star), and just not caring caused the series to have a sharp decline.
Al Jean swooping in, however, finished the job. For Seasons 13-21, Jean tried to turn the show into Family Guy Lite, and the past 7 seasons have been a really bizarre clash of styles with the Matt Selman episodes being the only consistent good ones.

An animated show that became a cartoon. How many quotable lines come post Season 9? Not many that I can think of. It turned from a TV show that set trends to a show that merely referenced them.

The last episode I watched and was into was when they went to New York. I dunno if it was me or the show, but once the next season came up, I just wasn't into it.
"Zombie Simpsons" is a good way to put it...anytime I randomly tune in these days it's unrecognizable from the humor and tone of the first few seasons.

A lot of people would say the show jump the shark with the Frank Grimes episode. As much as I like that episode I can't disagree

The show didn't have an end goal in sight, and because people were still religiously watching (and still do), it just kept going on and on, way past the point that it had anything new and/or interesting to say. It's kind of where FAMILY GUY has gotten to in the last season or so. It's still on. It's still funny enough to not be completely terrible, but for the most part it's just kind of....there. But people will continue to watch it for nostalgic purposes, as they remember when it used to be great, and hold out hope that it will be again...and not to say there there aren't episodes produced by both shows that aren't still decent at times, but they will never be what they were, as all the great episodes have been done. All the great stories have been told.

I definitely agree with when Mike Scully became showrunner. That's when the show dropped from being one of the best things to ever air on television to merely entertaining.
I'll still watch Simpsons and the later episodes are still more enjoyable than a lot of the other crap on TV. But it's a shell of what it was in its prime.

Well they came about in the early 2000s with a nice math-rocky alternative sound that was fairly unique and then hit it big with F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.

Should have ended with the movie I'd wanted a Simpsons movie since I was a kid, and I know it was in development for a while but I found the story really underwhelming for there finally being a Simpsons movie.

For me today's writing has no subtlety, no creativeness, it just parrots family guy and i hate family guy

Do you think it would've been better if they went with the original plan of making Hank Scorpio the main villain?

If it were done in the style of Family Guy and was actually funny, I might be able to forgive it. It's not though, it's like watching an episode of Family Guy where literally none of the jokes are the least bit amusing.

I remember a season four episode where Homer had a heart attack and needed heart surgery. The episode was great, it was very funny, dramatic and poignant. Most importantly, the story felt important to the characters. Ten or more years later I'm watching a random episode and "Homer having a heart attack" was a throwaway joke used to kill thirty seconds of airtime. It had no bearing on the plot and was never mentioned again. It was at that point I realized the show just wasn't worth it anymore.

I wasn't a fan of the movies main villain incarnation, and I think the story was way too OTT. Not a fan of the Alaska segment, and I think rather than some epic premise (like the movie gave us) I always expected a Simpsons movie to have a more grounded story just fire on all cyblinders in terms of comedy and heart which a lot of the episodes excelled at.

It's gone on too long, It should've ended years ago (I'd say around season 10/11) and a few years later make the movie (Make people miss it)
The same can be said for other shows

It's good to know that there is a term for Homer now. There was a difference back in the day where Homer was lazy compared to blatantly trying to use the system in one of his get rich schemes. He's absolutely Urkel levels of annoying now.
I can't definitively recall when I stopped watching, I think around 1997 or 1998 but I remember for a few years just reflecting on those bad episodes and letting it make me believe that was how the show always was. It wasn't until late high school where I started watching again with a friend and realized that the show was once good.
I own the first 10 seasons, although I could easily drop the latter two since I don't recall much good stuff there. The only reason I even bothered to buy them is if I wanted to watch on a whim, I have a 72% chance it's a newer episode...and f*** that.
