The pace of the game allows great banter and storytelling, especially with my Giants who have the best broadcast team in the sport. Basketball on the radio is too busy for my liking.

Baseball is obviously the best. Football is a close 2nd. Both of them have pretty easy plays to call from an announcer perspective. Basketball is a little worse, but still good. Hockey is terrible. The play takes a long time to develop and is very fluid. It's hard to call the action, and even on TV requires a ton filler talk during play. I remember having to listen to a Blues/Wild playoff game a couple years ago and it was pretty terrible.

Anything but golf is fine if you got the right folks. Golf is not exciting in any medium.
Americans, take note. If there's World Cup soccer on the radio...forget listening to the English broadcast. They are duller than dishwater. Find it in Spanish. I don't know what they're saying, but it's a lot more exciting. (Let's be honest, you don't really care about what they're talking about. But the Spanish guys...listen to the tone and inflection of the voices. Business picks up when a play is breaking down and there's a team on the run about to shoot for "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!"
NASCAR/Auto racing is good on the radio when you got the right people. It's really no different than those idiots on TV.

Hockey is a very visual sport and while I think the commentators do their best, it misses a LOT not being able to see the action.
Baseball and soccer are the best IMO when you have commentators that are really into it.

I love how they break the announcers up so each guy only calls certain parts of the track. They did this on TV at a recent road race and I thought it worked great.

The Indy 500 on the radio is so captivating. I was working on leveling a path then installing pavers while listening to it.
They slowly build the race, you can hear engines roaring behind them, fans yelling. It relaxes me. I continue working.
Until those last 10 laps, when the announcers are getting excited and more animated. I took a break and started yelling at my radio, "HOLD HIM OFF! HOLD HIM OFF!"

I have listened to the Indy 500 several times, usually because I am either travelling or working during the event and it's really good. It really captures the spirit of the race. As far as league sports, baseball and football work on radio, although baseball heavily relies on the broadcast team. I love Pat Hughes on the radio, and there are many great broadcasters in MLB, but the White Sox games get carried on a favorite station of mine and it's terrible.

College Football/NFL Football with 100% over the top Homer announcers on the radio is a thing of beauty. The highs and lows are hilarious. Hearing them deadpan an opponents touchdown, to mocking surprise as a bonehead player commits a bonehead penalty... to flat out yelling and cheering rather than announcing for big positive plays.
