So it's coming close to the end of the year and I decided to pick my 5 best films of the year and if anyone else wants to share their lists (and why) then go ahead.
My top 5
5. Mission: Impossible 3 Like him or not Tom Cruise is great in this film. Pit him against one of the best actors of our lifetime (Phillip Seymour Hoffman clearly having a blast as the bad guy) and it produces one of the best action films of the year.
4. Thank You for Smoking A really good black comedy with some of the best written dialogue of the year. A good all-round cast and it even has Robert Duvall and William H Macy.
3. Casino Royale After Die Another Day (Worst Bond ever) the franchise needed an adrenaline shot to restart it, Casino Royale delievers the goods and then some. Minimal use of Crappy CGI, Old-fashioned stunt scenes, realistic gadgets and most importantly no Pierce Brosnan.
2. The Departed The best assembled cast of the year team with one of the world's greatest directors and produce Scorcese's best since Casino. Every actor in this film is on their top game and Marky Mark steals the show for me.
1. United 93 People can argue whether or not this film should have been made as long as they like, I don't care. The Passengers on the plane deserved to have their story told. This film doesn't just rip your heart out of your chest, it wrings it out to dry afterwards. The most absorbing film of the year.
And for the record, most disappointing film of the year goes to Pirates of the Carribean 2.

I don't see why everybody rags on Pirates, I personally enjoyed it. But that's just my opinion. I can't say I disagree with your choices, because I haven't seen any of them.

I have seen a grand total of one of these (Thank You for Smoking), but it was quite funny.

I honestly can't add to this list since this year all I've been doing is catching up on older films.

Top 5, hmm -
1. BORAT -
saw this a few days ago and it's defenitely worth the hype, some of it seems staged like the Pamela Anderson bit, but it doesnt make it any less funny.
2. CASINO ROYALE -
Never been into bond films, but got talked into this yesterday and didn't regret it, best action movie i've seen in a long time.
3. AWESOME: I F****N' SHOT THAT!!
Included this because it did get a cinema release, which is where i saw it. The best god damn cocnert movie i've ever seen, way ahead of anything else out there in terms of editing/originality, and it's the beastie boys. you can't go wrong with the beastie boys and Mixmaster Mike.
4. A SCANNER DARKLY -
I'm out of reasons, it's just really good, and the whole cartoon/graphics gimmick for the film doesn't take anythign away from the content.
5. AMERICAN HARDCORE -
documentary on US hardcore, up until around 1986, features all of SSD in the same room for the first time in a long time, i guess this is kind of a niche thing but i thought it was interesting, and i'm well into hardcore.

- Underworld: Evolution - Superman Returns - Ultraviolet - The Grudge 2 - Stay Alive
Those were the only films that came out in 2006 that I saw, and they were good enough for me ;D

1. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan: Laugh-til-your-sides-hurt funny, with plenty of eye-opening social satire mixed in. Sacha Cohen ought to be nominated for an Oscar for his acting here, because he's positively brilliant.
2. United 93: the best movie about 9/11 that we will ever see. It took me back to that awful, tragic day and reopened every emotional scar it had left me with. This movie came at the right time, no matter what anyone says. The world needed a reminder, and this movie serves that purpose excellently.
3. The Night Listener: Perhaps the most overlooked film of the year, and that's unfortunate because it's a hell of a flick. A masterclass in acting thanks to Robin Williams and Toni Collette, and a masterclass in mystery writing thanks to Armistead Maupin and Terry Anderson. Simply brilliant in all ways.
4. Monster House 3D: Despite bright, glossy, kid-friendly animation, this movie's screenplay is definitely written for older audience members who know the horror films of the 80's. Smart and funny, and the 3D animation is beautifully done. I also appreciate that there were actual scary moments, something that many serious horror flicks forget to have these days.
5. X-3: I'm a big fan of the X-Men movie trilogy, and this one is the best of the bunch. Sure, some of the story arcs (Phoenix, for example) are rushed, but the action is great. There's also the added benefit of a cast loaded with good-looking chicks.
Worst movie of the year: World Trade Center: this is the exact opposite of United 93. Oliver Stone made a movie that's less a remembrance of tragedy and more of an action film with moments of Douglas Sirk-like melodrama, complete with dramatic soft-focus closeups and string music swelling in the background. If you added Rock Hudson, you could retitle it Come September 11th*.
*Rock Hudson was in a flick called Come September, in case you don't get the reference.

I really want to see this. I dunno what the distribution is like in cinemas over in the US, but i managed to see it on a one off showing over here. It's really worth the wait.

Sorry I don't have reasons for these.
PS X-Men 3 sucks.

Worst part about it is a lot of the live footage has studio versions of the songs dubbed over. there's still enough unseen material though to make it worth while. Also good seeing how much of a mess some of the guys look now. Springa from SSD is the worst.

I've seen six films this year and only hated one (which was Idlewild. A major disapointment, but a good soundtrack though)...so here are my top five in no order
The Departed Clerks 2 Jackass number two Borat Thank you for Smoking
why is it that the past 3 comidies i've seen (clerks, Jackass, and Borat) each have one gross out scene that tops the scene of the previous movie?

Clerks 2 Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (Possibly the best movie ever made.)
