So I listened to Cena's appearance on Edge and Christian's podcast, and something he said got me thinking. I don't remember the exact quote, but he was talking about the back-and-forth promos he had been having with Roman the past few weeks, and he explained how he didn't pull any punches on the mic. He explained his reason for doing that was to force Roman to up his own game. And it's pretty obvious that Roman failed to do that at first, but improved as the weeks progressed.
And it got me thinking---throughout this whole agonizing Roman experiment, no one's really DONE that yet.
Through all of Roman's feuds, he's never really been forced to CONSISTENTLY contend with people that can straight up evicerate him on the microphone. There several people in the WWE who are capable of doing that, but for the most part, Roman's feuds have all been structured so that he wouldn't HAVE to go one-on-one with a better mic-man. Cena himself is untouchable on the microphone, but he didn't start out that way. The way Cena got that way was by having guys like The Miz, guys like CM Punk, guys like Edge, guys like The Rock---just completely rip into him, tearing his character apart from the jorts up to the point where he would fire back and show what he's really capable of.
Roman NEEDS that pressure. He needs someone like Miz ripping into him the way he ripped into Daniel Bryan on Talking Smack. He needs probably even more time with Cena. He needs someone across the ring from him to bring the same kind of aggression that a night-after-Wrestlemania-crowd brings at him, because that's when we get Roman at his best.

Cena isn't that good. Anytime he gets upstaged he just goes into "I'll kick your ass mode".

Cena and the OP's points are better made if we are discussing someone who is an upper midcard performer that they are taking a risk on in making a main eventer. Roman has been in the ME for what seems like forever. If this weren't the age of scripted, tightly controlled promos he'd be the Billy Bitchcakes to Cena's Rock asking God why he sucks.
Roman's response to someone tearing him up on the mic should be getting physical & intimidating. Not "getting better over a few weeks" before being given the chance to semi-retire the current generation's top star.

It's easy to win a verbal battle if the other guy is clearly scripted to lose.
Instead of shitty worked shoot promos, Roman should be turned heel and booked properly, by a creative team who put people over rather than exposing their weaknesses.

the problem with this is that there are few amazing promo guys in the E currently. Who is there that's really good that could believably be going toe to toe with Roman? Cena, Miz, Heyman, surely there are a few others but I can't place them currently. In theory it's a good idea, in practice I'm not sure.

Cena has said he doesn't pull punches with anyone
Doing it against Roman, okay fine I guess but he's used this same excuse against "rookies" as well
