Anybody else think the persona he adopted upon his return was an absolute waste? I realize he wasn't wrestling at the time but a 90's version of Ravishing Rick Rude would've worked perfectly with DX. Instead we got lame stoic JC Penny suit wearing can I see your ID before proceeding to to elevator bank 18-34 Rick Rude. Instead of We got Dave Wannstedt Rick Rude I don't get why he settled into such a forgetful, colorless role. It was a poor use of his natural talents. Also around that time we got SWAT team Big Bossman and jeans British Bulldog. Always bugged me. It took a lot of identity and personality out of the characters.

And yet, the old Ravishing Rick Rude would've still perfectly fit in the Attitude Era.

The original idea of Rude being "insurance" for anybody on the roster if they meet his price is something they need to bring back ASAP.

"What I'd like to have right now.....is for all you Tapout-wearing sweathogs to keep the noise down while I take my suit off and show all the ladies what a real manager is supposed to look like."

It would've been a fun storyline, if he could wrestle again, for DX to start taking him for granted and then for Rude to snap and come back as Ravishing Rick for a feud with HBK.

Why did her come back to WWF in the first place? He just fit in so much better with WCW at that point?

Lmao Dave Wannstedt. I never got it either. As a kid I didn't even realize he was the same guy that used to wear the cool, colorful tights a few years before.

Wasn't he retired by then? I think he also had an insurance policy that prevented him from wrestling regardless?

He was still very much Ravishing Rick. Even some of his promos maintained his old persona. His promo talking to Sunny about why he has returned, he even hints at getting her in bed. He was a tough guy enforcer on the exterior, but still Ravishing Rick at heart. Character wise, it fit DX, having the enforcer type around them that was similar to Shawn in personality kayfabe.
IRL, he'd been a better fit in that character in the Hart Foundation. His real life persona was more in kin with the Harts. Such a crazy contrast between Rick Rude and Richard Rood.

He was retired by then from his back injury. Besides I love enforcer Rick Rude, he was a badass.

Plus, he was in ECW at around the same time doing a little more of a R Rated version of his "Ravishing" character. I remember his turning heel and briefly joining up with Shane Douglas, stating that "The Franchise" was paying him in "cash and gash," referring to Francine.

Suited Rick Rude felt like Suited Mr Perfect with Ric Flair.

The original idea of Rude being "insurance" for anybody on the roster if they meet his price is something they need to bring back ASAP. It’s a solid idea that WWE flirts with every now and again, but rarely if ever does a great job following through with. I think the most successful/memorable instance of a wrestling mercenary/mercenaries in WWE was the APA. A more recent attempt at this I can remember is Wade Barrett saying he was, “Open for business” which made him sound more like he was a prostitute.

I actually went on Webcrawler to look up Gash and what he meant exactly.
