No, that's not news. But when you go back and watch his stuff, your jaw will hit the floor. This is from a program he did with Hiro Matsuda. God damn.Gooooooood daaaaaaaamn.Even if promos weren't as scripted today, I doubt most active wrestlers now could match his charisma.

Dusty was so good because I can tell he was legit having fun out there. That's something that goes a long way.

Even if promos weren't as scripted today, I doubt most active wrestlers now could match his charisma. Dusty would kill scripted promos, as long as they were written as well as the ones he did. And he wouldn't have had the weird repetitions that are charming because it characterizes promos of that era, but they are a minor weakness.

The ones like him, Jake Roberts, Macho Man et al would excel in any era because they believed in the character they were putting across and thus made you do the same. They could still do that with a script as needed.

"Arn Anderson has never been nuthin' but a walk-behinder, and when you walk behind and you're not a leader, then the view never changes baby, the view never changes baby, the view never changes!"
That promo with Dustin and of course the "Hard Times" promo are my favorites.
The man was platinum on the mic

My favorite promo of his is still the "SHAMEFUL" one he did when Babydoll backstabbed him to ally with the Four Horsemen. He sold the anger, as would be expected of a good promo, but what made it into a great one was, he also sold the pain and betrayal. It's not easy, and certainly not always safe, as a top face to show vulnerability, but the payoff can be tremendous.

Dusty was so lazy compared to today’s stars. Today’s hardworking superstars go out there and put in 20 minutes of promo work. Dusty would do - what? Two or three minutes? And people call this guy a legend?

Love him or hate him, Dusty knew how to fire up a crowd.
I love the Cornette story about building up Big Bubba Rogers as a machine. Dusty ran to the ring with a chair, blasted Bubba with it to the point it looked like a wooden necklace. Bubba calmly removed the chair. Then his hat. Then his sunglasses. And Dusty backed down. And Dusty never backs down. The crowds were like, "Shit, how can you stop this guy when even Dusty is getting away from him?"

Like how Dusty could get to the point and get the crowd's emotions going in a couple of minutes as opposed to a long winded segment that just fills time.

Dusty was also giving some damn great promos in 1993 on that Dirty 'Ol Assassin.

The best part of the story was the chair was supposed to be gimmicked to break, and apparently, the person forgot to set it up to break. At least, that's the story Cornette told Austin, but it could just be a tall tale. Seems like there wouldn't be much point in lying about it, though.

That and back then you only got 3-4 minutes to get to your point or else you're running into that classic Tully Blanchard vs. Rocky King TV title match.

Sooner or later I need to dig it out, rip it and upload it somewhere, but on one of those Florida DVDs that Mike Graham released in the early 2000s is one of the most absolutely fantastic promos I've ever heard Dusty cut. He's by himself in a locker room after a match, he's busted up, hurt and bleeding. Starts off sounding a bit weak, talking about the events of the match, and as he continues, he gets angrier and angrier, his voice building and building and by the end of it, he's on total fire. No little catch phrases, no Hard Times, none of that...just pure emotion growing until it boils over.
