What was behind this? I could understand him returning as a manager but I found a video on YouTube of him vs Tracy smothers, why return to the ring. Also how did he go from dok Hendrix back to Michael Hayes?

Without doing research, I seem to recall that after Dok Hedrix he moved into a full-time backstage role. Then he came back as Michael Hayes to manage the Hardys for a bit. I can't say I remember him working singles matches, though.

Also how did he go from dok Hendrix back to Michael Hayes? He was still Dok Hendrix in one of the most hilariously awful promo segments with The Brood on an episode of Smackdown (The Attitude Era Podcast review of this segment is HIGHLY recommended), where he got a blood bath at the end of it. Then I guess after that point he just went by Michael Hayes again and recruited the Hardy Boyz to fight E&C.

He had already been working indies as Michael Hayes for a few years when this came about, doing mostly Texas gigs for Chris Adams' Superstars of Wrestling promotion. I saw him live at a card about a year before this, and he did the whole thing just as heel Michael "PS" Hayes. Saw him again at a show that took place just after he got brought into the Hardys angle and he was a babyface this time with his red WWF shirt look.

Man, it's easy to forget that the Edge and Christian / Hardys feud started with a bunch of stupid crap like that, the New Brood, and fighting over Terri Runnels.

I mean, the matches were great, but the idea that they were going through all this hell to have her as a manager was stupid.

Hayes in the tight-shirt-and-club-pants look just seems so wrong.
