As a kid growing up Bret “Hitman” Hart was the guy I followed closely. He was a fighting champion and took on all challengers. Recently, I took a look back at his first WWF World Championship run that started in October 1992 and lasted until April 1993. Feel free to share your memories of Bret Hart’s first championship run. I will always remember how exciting it was to turn on superstars and get that surprise announcement of bret hart being the new WWF champ!
I think its cool he just gave everyone a title shot, then he could honestly say he beat EVERY ONE!
GO BRET GO!

It was such a weird time, as I was a full time fan up to Summerslam and then WWF scheduling changed in the UK so I started missing alot of programs around this time (and also Gladiators started and I basically cheated on the WWF for a while) but I recall watching the Superstars were Ric Flair had won the title, missed about 6 weeks worth of TV and I tuned in and Bret (who had lost to Bulldog) was champion all of a sudden, then I saw Survivor Series and Warrior was out and Perfect was with Macho. To a fan dipping in and out this was crazy.
I just wish they had not hot shotted it too him, a bigger build would have been awesome. I understand circumstances put him in that position but Flair was only off the road for a month with his injury, surely they could have jiggled house show line ups around for a month. Although I guess it was a different time and I cant recall any time before that were a current World Champion was injured and could not work the house show loop

Macho Man should have won the Rumble '93, then put over Hart at Mania 9 in a friend vs friend respectful match.
If you push back Flair's loser leaves town match with Mr Perfect to Mania, then the card that is now maligned becomes potentially quite awesome.
Yoko can get tossed at the Rumble in a group effort and work Duggan at Mania in a revenge match from his attack prior to the Rumble.

Yoko can get tossed at the Rumble in a group effort and work Duggan at Mania in a revenge match from his attack prior to the Rumble. Technically WMIX was the first ever not to feature Hogan nor Savage in main event and that was refreshing, sure it turned out how it turned out but the next WMX was truly the one without Hogan/Save main event. To me it made sense to build up Yokozuna as unstoppable main event monster and a true challenger for Bret who already beat everyone on the roster. I agree that match against Randy should have happened but not on WM but rather before it. Direct consequence from such match would be the Royal Rumble match itself. Hypothetically if Bret had already went over Savage prior to RR no one would have bought into Yokozuna surprise win over Macho in RR match. It was perfect setup for Yokozuna to go to WrestleMania. I didn't mind Bret loosing to Yoko and WMIX and I honestly think King of the Ring route was the right route for Bret until the rematch on WMX. There was zero chance of Hogan vs Bret so don't daydream about it but instead it helped Yoko a lot to go over Hogan with kicking out of legdrop (although miserable Hogan sold it quite cheap, he even went for simple Hercules shoulder cover until he realized it's not for the victory) and scoring a pinfall. At the time I honestly think Bret vs Tatanka could have been a much better draw than Bret vs Savage when it comes to face vs face matches. Cool angle could have been world champion Bret vs intercontinental champ Tatanka. It could have been perfect first loss for Tatanka that should have properlled him forward without IC baggage on his shoulder. IC would have ended up vacated in this case.

I remember turning one of the shows on to see Mean Gene - and this was before any matches - introducing the 'new world champion'. These words were shocking enough as it seemed that Flair had only just regained the belt. The bigger shock, however, was seeing Bret come out with the title. I assumed it would be Warrior as he was still in the picture after the Summerslam match, so Bret being the champ really caught me by surprise.
I liked the idea of the 'fighting champion', though, and it became a regular thing to see Bret taking on someone like Bezerker, a Headshrinker, Virgil or another mid-carder on TV. It was a refreshing change to squash matches, a refreshing change to see other guys getting title shots and a refreshing change to see smaller wrestlers being pushed in championship roles. Although Hogan was gone, I always felt that the title was in safe hands with Bret. It was a good time to be a fan.

I won't even pretend that I saw wrestling as anything other than a legitimate sport around this time. I was happy Bret Hart had taken the title off the cheater Ric Flair.
I saw Bret Hart as a superior athlete who was on par with anyone else who had held the title in the past, but one who was definitely a better wrestler than Hulk Hogan.

I remember turning on the show and them talking about Bret being the new champion and I thought they meant that he beat Bulldog for the IC title again, it just seemed almost out of nowhere that he was the world champion.
The fighting champion thing was pretty cool as he always made his opponents look good. I mean I remember him making Skinner look like a legit threat in their matches for crying out loud. It did get a little tiresome that he was always wrestling, I want my world championship matches to feel special and have a big fight feel. It is kind of tough to have that feel when Bret is on every show defending against Virgil and Papa Shango.

The crazy thing was, after Wrestlemania 9 Bret and Savage were wrestling on overseas tours with Savage putting him over. Vince wasted a potential golden PPV match - hell Savage would have been the obvious replacement for Hogan for the Summerslam match for Bret. Have Savage v Yoko at King of the Ring setting up him and Bret for Summerslam 93

I heard about the switch on the radio, lest you think Bret's "Canadian hero" was overblown.

I was a Hart fan, but I apparently didn't buy into his chances against top guys as I recall thinking Razor was taking the gold at Rumble 93. And I mean this in a total kayfabe manner, not a "the office likes...." kind of way.

TBH there match at King of the Ring was much better in Jmo
