My son's school posted a FB video called "With math I can..." featuring a bunch of students from his grade. The kids all picked their own thing, and mine leads off the video with...
"With math I can be a famous YouTuber."
...Goddamn it.
With math I can AIM HIGHER!!!!!

Rhett & Link are still pulling in 8 Figures a year and have a legit Hollywood presence now. Mind you, there's not much money left in YouTube for _NEW_ people. But if you're old-guard Establishment there? Yeah.

I have no doubt that these guys do very well, but I'm looking at one of their IMDB pages and don't really see any Hollywood movies. I've never really heard of them before, but what kind of presence do they have in the film industry?

Is "disappointed Ric Flair" some kind of new term? Ah, I see. Speaking to the OP's question, it seems these days youtube can be a viable financial path. And there are way worse types of videos to be known for than math videos.

Those kids who open up new toys and play with them are pulling bankof YouTube, they get 1000s of subscribers. It is my understanding YouTube is pretty wide open to make bank off of if you find your lane, it is a lot of young people's preferred content provider, that is probably why your kid said that. This actually may be a case of you being a bit out of touch.

I'm sure kids before this year never wanted to pursue an unconventional career path with high risk and little chance of success.

I've never really heard of them before, but what kind of presence do they have in the film industry? Ilana Glazer, Abbi Jacobson and Issa Rae transitioned from their youtube series to film and television with Comedy Central and HBO respectively. The youtubers who make money take their business very serious behind the scenes. It's no different than doing a short film. You keep everything within a budget, allocate time when you shoot and what the content will be that will keep your subscribers. I'm not saying it's the most viable career choice, only that the youtubers who do it are not "lazy" and just don't want to work a "real" job. The well put together youtube videos, i.e. the most popular ones, are not just a camera placed on a table. Work is done to get it there and money is spent on equipment both in production and post. Most youtubers make their money directly through advertisers who want their products featured in their videos. www.nytimes.com/2014/02/02/business/chasing-their-star-on-youtube.html?_r=2And what is a good career? Lawyer? The market is oversaturated with lawyers and you end up working 7 days a week for a law firm without overtime just to keep your lowly position. There is a high suicide rate among doctors. Getting an accounting degree is a good career to have however. And you can transition that into other fields. And maybe when your kid gets older in high school, gravitate toward that.

Since it’s what the thread has become, put me down for the side whose jaw drops when YouTubing is being as justified or more justified alongside doctors or lawyers ... or justified at all really. There are 7 figure Youtubers out there, yeah. But jaw drops when the argument is being made tongue-in-cheek that it’s just as reasonable of an attainable goal as any other profession. To me, It’s like when C and below knucklehead students say in their essays on professional pursuits: “The career I chose was the NFL/NBA/etc...”

I was just writing in general about youtubers who went into film and television and then went on a tangent.
