You'll see people make posts like this now and then, so how about a dedicated thread: if you could book a match (or an entire card, go for it) involving wrestlers who didn't exist in the same promotion at the same time, who would you put head-to-head? Maybe these wrestlers/teams/stables existed in the same promotion at some point but one performer wasn't in their prime yet, or hadn't hit on their money gimmick, or hadn't evolved their in-ring style, but whatever the case is let's pretend you now have a time machine and unlimited cash to make the ideal clash happen.
I'm starting with my ultimate dream upper-midcard title match:
Bret "The Hitman" Hart (WWF 1992) vs. "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson (NWA 1986), and let's make it IC title vs. TV title. Bret and Arn are two of the all-time best examples of guys who just "get" wrestling when it comes to making every single thing they do in the ring matter and make sense, and know how to make matches feel like legitimate fights. Early 90s Bret is an up and coming babyface but isn't booked to be naive or willing to take BS, while mid-80s Arn has fully developed into The Enforcer and likely wants to goad Bret into a full-on fight, figuring a brawl favors him due to his experience, toughness, and the fact that Ole is probably near ringside. I imagine the offense would look crisp and well executed while the selling would make it all look like death. Yeah, these two crossed paths when the Hart Foundation would face the Brain Busters, but no way that was going to be the same.

Hulk Hogan (1987) vs. 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin (1997): Two of the biggest names in wrestling going at it in their primes. Hogan as the superhero and Austin as the low down son of a bitch villain. A great clash of styles, philosophies and the biggest icons of the business.
Ric Flair (1985) vs. CM Punk (2010): Two very different wrestlers with their lifestyles clashing outside of the ring as much as they will inside. Would be worth it alone to see The Nature Boy and the Straight Edge Saviour go toe to toe in a promo battle.
AJ Styles (2010) vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. (1996): Two great high flying styles going at it could produce a very exciting and well put together match. With the two working together, would be great to see them flying through the air.
Jake 'The Snake' Roberts (1991) vs. 'The Pope' D'Angelo Dinero (2010): Two very charismatic stars with gimmicks that are poles apart. Wold be a more grounded match but with a very intense and enjoyable feud around it to watch two differing wrestlers highlight what makes them stand out.
Beer Money (2010) vs. British Bulldog & Owen Hart (1997): Two very talented teams with both sides able to play as Heel or Face depending on circumstances. Would be a really fun knock down brawl with Owen providing the technical skills for a good few spots while Davey can match brawling with the other team when needed.

Cena vs Tanahashi would be the shit. Even though they're both past their peak, you know they'd go all out for it.

1994 Bret Hart vs 2014 Brock Lesnar. Bret would be defending the title in this scenario. He works best as the scrappy, underdog champion and this was Brock at his best in that final boss role he’s been in the last few years, so seeing Bret try to outsmart and size up “The Beast” would be a great in-ring story.

Totally random one that popped in my head, but 1987/88 Tully and Arn could've had an awesome contrast in styles feud with the 2000 Dudley Boyz.
