Erm... I'm not really the typical target audience but wow, I think that looks lame as shit.

This looks kind of amazing. Amazon has been inconsistent with their original output, but The Boys was a pretty awesome adaptation of an existing property, and in that case they didn't have any film to go off of. Reason to expect great things.

I'm gonna be very cautiously optimistic about this. It looks gorgeous, I'll grant it that much.
Plus it's good to know Howard Shore is on board. Totally forgot he was until the first few bars of the Rivendell theme kicked in.

This is a well-thought argument from a Tolkien fan.

Honestly, I'm kinda glad. Making the Hobbit trilogy made Jackson miserable and he was clearly burned out on Middle-Earth. For better or worse, this show needs to be its own thing.

Anyone check this out yet?
Really loving it. Everything is just so massive and epic in all sense of the word. Music is unique from the movies but wouldn't feel out of place in them. The actors are fantastic across the board. Solid action and some interesting mysteries. Has me coming up with theories left and right and looking up timelines of people and events.

I'm not crazy about Elrond's casting, and Lenny Henry takes me out of every scene he appears in, but everything else is really good.

Like it so far.
Really like seeing stuff background stuff in it's "pre lotr" state. Like green Mordor. Snow topped Mt Doom. Elven and Dwarf cities at their zenith. Live action Brown Lands and northern Wastes. Then super ancient stuff like Valinor, the Trees and I'm pretty sure that was frozen Angband ruins and the "further north" fortress was Utumno. And one of the monuments in Lindon I'm fairly certain was Luthien and the Hound of Valinor, Huan... if I recall. AKA: the first son of the bitch to put Sauron down.

I'm sure it'll be great I just have no idea what their business plan is. How many Prime subscriptions are they going to have to sell for the thing to break even? Are the collectors going to buy enough toys and DVDs for it?

I watched the first episode and was quite bored. It failed to hook me until the very end.
Galadriel is boring--they've turned her into generic action chick who we've seen in countless other franchises. You can plop her into any YA tv series or movie and she'd fit right in.
I was most interested in the Harfoots.
It looks beautiful and is really well shot--no doubt. There were some awesome shots there.
But I was just bored--and it wasn't because it was slow or not enough action. It was just dull. Dull dialogue, dull writing, dull story, dull characters.
House of the Dragon had little action in the first episode but hooked me immediately---I wanted to see more of Daemon and his plans, the princess and whether she will get the throne or not, the king and how good of a ruler is and was intrigued by Otto Hightower's extremely subtle scheming and manipulation.
Now--I was interested in the Harfoots, like I said. I like their society hidden away from threats. I like the fact they are clearly vulnerable. I liked Lenny Henry's character and the hints of his wisdom.
Another bit I liked was the villagers resentment towards the elves. THAT was interesting. That they see the elves as oppressors and the elves seeing them as evil followers of Morgoth because their ancestors followed him.
