November 17th, 1978.
The first and only airing of The Star Wars Holiday Special.
An entire scene in Wookie language! Bea Arthur singing! Carrie Fisher singing! And a cartoon about Boba Fett!

I feel like if this was in HD quality you'd be able to see the coke lines on noses in every live action sequence.
And possibly even the animated parts.
If nothing else that studio had to smell like a liquor bottle. Nearly everybody looks "off"

Admittingly, I watch the Rifftrax all the time.
The Lumpy jokes are hilarious if you accept he's a chronic masturbator with a future behind bars.

To quote writer Bruce Villanch "The Wookies sound like fat people having orgasms" Ok.... Villanch did a long done interview with TV academy people. It's posted on YouTube (as a sidebar if anyone is the king of media/tv geeks like I am I can't recommend them enough). He goes over a wide variety of subjects from working with Bette Midler, to the Rob Lowe/Snow White Oscar fiasco, to writing for Paul Lynde. On the subject of The Star Wars Holiday Special he explains that Lucas wanted to do something new prior to the next movie to have another piece of Star Wars media avalible for consumption. The thing was back in the 70s the only format that a network would give a random block of time to was thea variety show. Because they could be loaded with talent that they would use to draw viewers. So apparently the story was one that Lucas has a basic outline of and the he had to go and "variety" it.

Wonder how much Weird Al Yankovic paid for the bootleg copy of it. Back in the early 90s,at cons,a multigen bootleg VHS of the Holiday Special was 25 to 35 bucks. Skip ahead to 2005 and a better looking dvdr bootleg was 15 to 30 bucks.

Instead of a variety show they should have done a short story about Han and Chewie doing that cargo run for Jabba and having to dump the shipment when the Imperials showed up. If the network wanted some guest stars, I'd keep Bea Arthur in it because she was the only celebrity in the Holiday Special who seemed to vaguely fit into SW. Instead of singing and all that shit, she could have been some sort of rebel facilitator at Mos Eisley who Han delivered the cargo to so she could sell to buy the rebels some weapons instead of giving the shipment to Jabba. They could have filmed all of Harrison Ford's scenes on a single day and used stock footage for the space scenes.
