Having thought about it more, I really do believe the "mystery" of Rey's parents was completely built up by fans, at least as far as them being big players. There's even 2 scenes in Force Awakens and Last Jedi that play very similar that address it. Maz tells Rey that she knows the truth and that her parents aren't coming back for her and that what's important about her path is not what's behind her, but what's ahead, i.e. becoming a Jedi. She tries a more gentle way of making Rey accept this truth, but Rey's not ready to hear that and runs away. In Last Jedi, Kylo tells her something similar, but he's much more blunt about it even making her admit the truth to herself, her parents were nobodies who gave her up. Both scenes were about Rey needing to let go of her past. There was no tease or hint that Rey was really Luke's daughter or Obi Wan's granddaughter or anything like that. The reveal of Rey's parents identity wasn't ever supposed to be some earth shattering reveal.

And certainly not something I think JJ had any clue about an actual end result, if past behaviour is any indicator.

Just finishing it up now. This was not even close to the horrible movie I've seen people claim.
