What Were “the Cool” Parents You’ve Known Like?

Either if you thought they were cool, others thought they were cool, or they tried to be cool.

This is inspired by a Cracked article that just got posted.

We were friends with a cat whose parents were sorta hippies. The Mom seemed like a swinger. The dad would engage in "activities" with us while his wife drank wine, smoked cigarettes. They'd make us food and other goodies. They made their pool into a pond with fish in it and had a african guinea bird randomly living in their backyard. They also would host poetry jams, bands, stand up, and theater events in their backyard. Definitely unique. We all thought they were cool.

My dad was considered cool by my friends.

He looked younger than his age, was quite trendy with the way he dressed and is a funny guy. He was also very generous, like he often used to take me to Birmingham to see Aston Villa play and had no problem at all with getting a friend a ticket too.

The coolest parents to me were the ones who didn't need to ACT cool around you. They treated me and others visiting like adults where appropriate, trusted us where they could and didn't try and be our best friends, just friendly. No talking down, but also no pandering. They were just cool.

The worst ones were those who TRIED to be cool, trying to act like teenagers. We'd quite often end up at the home of one of the girls in our group, and her Mum would always come into the room, sit with us and try and gossip like a teenager, wanting to be in on everything. It was so cringeworthy.

Some people are cool naturally, some aren't, but they'll still come off well if they're natural at least.

When I was seeing a woman (still good friends) with two kids, and their friends were around, I didn't try and put on any airs and graces. If I had to act 'parental' around them, it would just be a case of "Come on guys, behave like grown ups" and 99/100 they responded well.

My friends thought that my dad was the coolest, because he looked like an old hippie. He was actually mean alcoholic who made us miserable.

I had a friend who's mom, we thought was so cool. She used to buy us alcohol and let us do drugs. Looking back at it, she wasn't cool. It was an awful environment.

As someone who just recently found out he's going to be a father, the last thing I want to be is a "cool parent". Where's the fun in that? I want to be the kind of Dad who shows up their teenage son or daughter in front of all of their friends.

My buddy Jason had the cool parents. His Dad let all the neighborhood kids/teens hang out at his place all the time. Would feed us. And when Jason got married at 18,his dad threw the bachelor party. Got 3 strippers and a load of booze. His only rule was unless you lived within 2 blocks of the house,you had to crash there that night.

My youngest has said his friends consider me the cool dad. Mostly cause "Unlike the other parents you treat us like adults and not dumb kids."

Almost every place I lived as a kid was chock full of shit talking parents that always told you that they don't play and they ain't one of your little friends.

My parents are proud geeks, it's pretty easy to talk with them about modern games/movies/tv/etc. They're not tryhards, but they're generally open minded about new things or ideas.

When I was younger I thought that my best mate's Dad was cool - he'd have an answer for everything, banter with you, treat you like a mate and was just good company. As a bonus, his Mum was - and is - a bit of alright.

However, all my friends though that my own Dad was cool - he'd always be welcoming, always laughing, had a good singing voice and was in a folk band.

Many years on, it's still the same premise despite my Dad being 70. The fact that my friends think that my Dad is cool is the best compliment I can give him.

Well one my mates had a mother who we all thought was awesome because she would buy us beer for parties.

But that was until years later when I found out that she was a full blown alcoholic who had nearly destroy her life.
