So we have Kevstaa's excellent and detailed list, but I'm curious, what are everyone else top 5 matches of the last year?
I haven't watched much WWE past Wrestlemania this year and I've only really followed NJPW since, so this is really a NJPW list. But here we go, top 5 in order.
1. Okada vs Omega at Dominion - it's the obvious choice, but it's the best choice for me. I can't remember a match I've been so invested in, biting at every near fall. Omega collapsing and Okada going flying with the attempted Rainmaker is my favourite moment in any match this year. A phenomenal classic.
2. Tomohiro Ishii vs Yuji Nagata at G1 Climax - there were probably better matches in the g1, some I'll mention below. But this was the only match I immediately went back to rewatch as soon as it was over. There was something about this match. Nagata's quest for a win was my favourite story in the g1 and Ishii is just the best all rounder on the planet right now. Just an amazing match.
3. Okada vs Omega at Wrestle Kingdom - what's to say that hasn't been said. Phenomenal match with perfect storytelling.
4. Tomohiro Ishii vs Keith Lee in RevPro - a match with a simple story, can Ishii lift the monstrous Lee? That these two made a crowd pop,for a suplex like it was the biggest high spot is a testament to both men's abilities. Ishii is just the goddamn best.
5. Tetsuya Naito vs Omega g1 climax final - this is the match that turned me on Naito. There were so many classics in the g1, with Ibushi, Sabre, Ishii and tonnes more having incredible matches (Yoshi-Hashi was also there) and I wasn't feeling Naito in the same way as I was the other big four. However, this brutal, all out war, with a series of scary spots and filled with drama, finally made me by into Naito. Absolute classic.

I've got it like this
#5: Pete Dunne Vs Tyler Bate: Great match high octane, fast paced, never a dull moment, it's exactly what you expect from the names involved and I wouldn't have it any other way. **** 1/2
#4: Ladder Match: AOP Vs DIY: Great stories, great high spots, maybe the best Ladder match I've ever seen. It also had one of the nastiest looking spots I've ever seen which made me think Johnny Wrestling straight up died **** 3/4
#3: Katsuyori Shibata vs Kazuchika Okada: It was intense it was hard hitting, and they kept an inhuman pace for well over a half an hour. The only negative aspect was the headbutt which ended Shibata's career which keeps it from the full 5 stars. **** 3/4
#2 John Cena vs AJ Styles: It delivered in every aspect you could ask for from a match like this, both men did what they do best and produced one of the most fast paced dramatic bouts of the year, with many believable nearfalls and incredible action throughout. **** 3/4
#1: Okada vs Omega I: Is there any doubt? It was two of the finest technicians and story tellers in all of wrestling doing what they do better than anyone else and produced a classic on a whole different level, being one of only 4 matches I've ever give the full 5 stars to. *****

Usually my top 5 are quite varied but New Japan has had an amazing year in-ring. Hell of my top 50 matches, 20 of them are NJPW matches, pretty high ratio that.
