Washington State qb dead of apparent suicide

Washington State quarterback Tyler Hilinski, 21, was found dead Tuesday in an apartment in Pullman, according to police.

He suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and a rifle and suicide note were found next to him, according to Pullman police.

Officers responded to his apartment to conduct a welfare check after Hilinski "did not show up for practice earlier in the day," police said.

Hilinski, a Claremont, Calif. native, just finished his redshirt sophomore season for the Cougars. He started the team's bowl game against Michigan State and was expected to take over the starting role next season. He enrolled at Washington State in January of 2015 after attending Upland High School in Southern California.

Washington State president Kirk Schulz tweeted, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hilinski family.'

He was 21.

Super Bowl champ and four-time Pro Bowler Drew Bledsoe, who played for the Cougars from 1990-92, shared an important message that he wants everyone to read on Wednesday, the day after his son’s Washington State football teammate, Tyler Hilinski, was found dead in what the police are investigating as an apparent suicide, according to USA TODAY Sports.

Bledsoe’s message, starting with the words “PLEASE READ,” says:

PLEASE READ!! I didn’t know Tyler well but he was a great friend and mentor to my son. That’s all a dad can ask for. As men we have to learn to TALK about how we are feeling. Suicide is the #2 killer of men between 18-45!! Reaching out for help when we need it is NOT a sign of weakness. Trusting your friends and asking for help is the ultimate sign of STRENGTH!! If we sprain an ankle we go see a doctor. If we’re struggling emotionally we have to learn to treat it the same way. It’s our obligation to the people we love and the people who love us.

As someone who's gone through depression in the past and seriously thought about ending it all I must say, there's someone out there you can talk to who will listen and help. I know it sounds cliche but, it's true. It saved my life.
